Getting around
There is no metro, and Orlando is not a city to conquer on foot. SunRail is a limited commuter service rather than a visitor network; Lynx is cheap but slow and indirect for resort-hopping, while the I-Ride Trolley is useful only along International Drive. Stay on-site at Disney or Universal and use that resort’s transport within its bubble; otherwise rideshare is often the least aggravating option, though surge pricing after park fireworks and closing is real. A rental car earns its keep for split stays, outlet shopping, beaches and day trips, but budget for hotel parking, aggressive traffic and tolls—rental-car toll programs can add fees. Do not drive between major parks at opening or closing if you can avoid it, and do not assume two pins a few miles apart are safely walkable along multilane roads.
When to go
Late February through April is the best compromise: relatively dry, warm rather than punishing, and before summer’s daily thunderstorms, though spring-break weeks are crowded and expensive. Summer is humid, storm-prone and exhausting outdoors; plan early starts, an indoor midday break and expect lightning delays. Thanksgiving, Christmas through New Year, Presidents’ Day and school-break periods bring the heaviest crowds; October–November and January–early February can be pleasant but cold fronts do happen. Park hours, seasonal events and water-park operations change by date, so check the specific calendar rather than relying on a generic "open daily" assumption.
Book before you land
Discovery Cove — capacity is limited to about 1,000 guests a day and it genuinely sells out; book as soon as dates are fixed, especially for school holidays. · Walt Disney World date-specific park admission and any separately ticketed nights, such as Halloween or Christmas events — buy before travel for holiday, spring-break and Christmas-week dates; special events can sell out well in advance. · Universal Orlando date-specific admission and Halloween Horror Nights — ordinary park entry is usually easier than Disney, but Halloween Horror Nights and peak-date Express products should be bought ahead. · Popular Disney dining, character meals and high-demand extras such as Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique — reserve when the booking window opens if they are central to the trip, not after landing. · Kennedy Space Center visitor admission and any desired special tour or launch-related program — reserve ahead once a launch date or school-holiday visit is firm.
Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Cape CanaveralFull day; allow roughly 1¼–1½ hours each way by car from the resort corridor, longer in traffic.
This is the clear best break from rides: real U.S. space history, large rockets and a far more distinctive experience than another generic Orlando attraction. A launch, if one aligns, makes it exceptional—but launches can move or scrub, so never make one your only reason to go.

Canaveral National SeashoreFull day; around 1½–2 hours each way depending on which entrance you use.
Choose this over Cocoa Beach if you want undeveloped Atlantic shore, trails and a genuine escape from chain hotels and beach traffic. It has few services and no resort conveniences, which is precisely the point.

Blue Spring State ParkMost of a day; roughly 1¼–1½ hours each way by car, plus arrive early because capacity can be an issue.
In winter, the manatee viewing is one of Central Florida’s best nature experiences and a much better use of a car than another outlet mall. In warmer months it is still a handsome spring-and-river outing, but less singular.

Winter ParkHalf day; roughly 20–35 minutes from Downtown or 40–60 minutes from the main resort districts, depending on traffic.
This is the easy half-day antidote to the resort belt: Park Avenue, lakes, mature trees, Kraft Azalea Garden and the Rollins Museum of Art make a coherent, human-scale afternoon. It is not a grand day trip, but it beats spending that time on International Drive if you want actual local texture.
