Faanui is an associated commune on Bora Bora’s northwest side, a residential and rural stretch of the main island rather than a self-contained resort town; its 2022 population was 3,312. It is where to look for Faanui Bay, WWII gun positions and a more lived-in island atmosphere, with Mount Otemanu and the lagoon always doing the visual heavy lifting. The trap is treating Faanui as a separate destination: it is part of a very small island whose real geography is the lagoon, the mountainous roadless interior, the single coastal road and the resort motus offshore.
The mental map
Think of Bora Bora, not urban Faanui: Vaitape is the practical hub on the west, Faanui lies north/northwest, and Matira and its public beach are at the south end. One sealed 31-km road traces much of the coast; the volcanic interior is steep, largely uninhabited and has no roads. The airport and many luxury resorts sit on separate motus, so boat logistics matter as much as road distance.
Pacing
This is not a checklist city. In one realistic main-island day, do Faanui’s WWII site and bay, stop in Vaitape, and finish at Matira Beach—or devote the day to a lagoon outing. Boat-transfer times, sparse buses, tropical heat and the fact that the best experiences are water-based make more than two or three stops a bad plan.

Matira Beach
Bora Bora’s signature public beach is the simplest, most reliable way to experience the lagoon without paying for a boat trip. Come for a swim, a low-key snorkel, and the sunset; it is better as a long, unhurried stop than a checklist photo stop.

Mount Otemanu
The jagged volcanic peak is Bora Bora’s defining landform and the visual anchor for nearly every great lagoon view. You do not need to attempt a summit: see it from Matira, the lagoon, roadside viewpoints, or a guided interior/4WD outing.
First visit? Stay in Vaitape.
For a first Bora Bora visit, Vaitape minimizes friction: it is the airport-ferry arrival point, has the best access to groceries, taxis, tours and casual dining, and lets travelers see the main island rather than being fully dependent on a resort boat schedule. Choose Matira instead only if beach time is clearly the priority.
Book before you land
Air Tahiti flights to and from Bora Bora (BOB), especially in the May–October high season · Resort airport-boat transfers if they are not included with your stay · A preferred small-group lagoon snorkelling or shark-and-ray excursion; reserve before arrival in peak season · Bora Bora Lagoonarium, if it is a priority—this is a commercial, enclosed lagoon attraction rather than a free snorkel stop
Free and great
- Walk Faanui Bay and the northwest coastal road for lagoon-and-mountain views; it is the better antidote to staying entirely inside a resort.
- Visit the Faanui WWII gun sites in daylight. They are free to explore, but treat the area as an outdoor historic remnant, not a curated museum.
- Swim or snorkel from Matira Beach at the south end of the main island. It is Bora Bora’s best-known public beach, and shallow water can yield tropical fish without paying for a boat tour.
- Watch sunset from the west side of the main island—Faanui or Vaitape side—where the lagoon and motus take the late light well.
- Ride or walk stretches of the 31-km coastal road, stopping at public roadside views of Mount Otemanu; do not attempt the mountainous interior without an appropriate guided route.
- Use your accommodation’s complimentary kayak or paddleboard if supplied; it is often the only genuinely free way to get out on the lagoon, but stay within the property’s permitted area and weather limits.
