Butchart Gardens is worth a major detour for its dramatic Sunken Garden and exceptionally curated seasonal displays, especially in April–May, summer rose/dahlia season, or for Christmas lights. It works best if you allow at least two unhurried hours and avoid expecting a quiet, wild garden in July or August.
Visit at opening or after 3:30pm
The Gardens identify opening through 10:30am and after 3:30pm as quieter windows; arrive at the Admission Gate/Visitor Centre, where ordinary daytime tickets can also be bought at the gate.
MoreBook Christmas slots when released
Magic of Christmas uses timed entry, unlike ordinary admission; buy a confirmed official time slot when sales open after Canadian Thanksgiving rather than relying on walk-up entry.
MoreAllow at least two hours
The official main route takes roughly 1.5–2 hours, but allow 3–4 hours for lunch, tea, children, photography, or summer evening programming.
MoreUse the Visitor Centre entrance
All normal arrivals use the Admission Gate/Visitor Centre at 800 Benvenuto Avenue; parking is free, luggage and small-item storage is free, and staff can provide maps and accessible-route advice.

The Butchart Gardens is a privately owned, family-run 55-acre (22-hectare) display garden at 800 Benvenuto Avenue in Brentwood Bay, Vancouver Island. Built from the exhausted limestone quarry beside Robert Butchart’s cement works, it began when Jennie Butchart brought in topsoil in 1912 to create the Sunken Garden; the family added the Japanese, Italian and Rose Gardens between 1906 and 1929. Now a National Historic Site of Canada, it is a highly managed, theatrical horticultural attraction rather than a wilderness reserve, replanted seasonally with millions of bedding plants across more than 900 varieties.
The quarry-walled Sunken Garden and Ross Fountain provide unusual visual drama, balanced by the wooded Japanese Garden, formal Italian Garden and seasonally strong Rose Garden. It merits a detour for first-time Vancouver Island visitors, gardeners, photographers, families and multigenerational groups, especially in spring, rose and dahlia seasons, or for the Christmas lights. Skip it if you want wild nature rather than designed horticulture, have only a severely compressed Victoria day trip, dislike curated gardens, or expect quiet paths in July and August.
Before you go
For ordinary daytime visits, no: admission is sold online and at the gate, and standard tickets are not timed reservations or a guarantee of entry. Arrive at opening or after 3:30pm for quieter conditions. Magic of Christmas is different: it uses timed entry, so buy an official timed ticket before travelling.
Choose another date or later timed slot, and recheck the official ticket page for returned inventory. Do not expect a normal gate ticket to work during the timed Christmas season, and do not buy vouchers from strangers. A transport package is suitable only if it explicitly includes confirmed timed Gardens admission.
Prices are seasonal and include tax. Published adult rates range from C$25.20 (January 7–17, 2027) to C$45.60 (May 2027); Magic of Christmas is C$41.00. The official rates page had not published June–September 2027 individual adult pricing, so check the live official rates page before purchase.
The adult 12-Month Pass costs C$88.50 and is valid for one year from activation. It generally pays off from about two visits in higher-priced seasons, but it is not valid for Fireworks or Special Events.
It is closed on December 25 and for the staff holiday from January 18 through January 31, 2027. During Magic of Christmas, the Japanese and Mediterranean Gardens are also closed, even though the rest of the Christmas experience operates.
Early April through May is the prime spring display, with tulips, cherry blossoms and dogwoods; mid-April to the first week of May is typically the spring peak. June through August is best for roses and maximal summer bedding, while August–September is especially good for dahlias. December through January 6 is best for the Magic of Christmas lights rather than botanical displays.
