Getting around
There is no metro, rail network or verified rideshare ecosystem to plan around. Central Jalalabad can be covered on foot in short, conservative daytime stretches, but heat, traffic and the security environment make walking between dispersed sights a poor strategy. Use a trusted local driver or a taxi arranged through a known hotel/contact, agree the fare before departure, and do not self-drive: road discipline, checkpoints and the Kabul highway’s accident risk are not visitor-friendly.
When to go
Go in spring—roughly March to April—or in autumn, especially October to November, when conditions are more manageable. Avoid the height of summer if possible: Jalalabad can reach 45–50°C, making outdoor sightseeing punishing. Tourist crowds are not the main constraint; Ramadan and Eid can alter daytime business hours and transport rhythms, while security restrictions or official closures can change access with little notice.
- Treat security planning as part of the itinerary, not as an optional precaution. Check current government travel advice, have a trusted local contact, and confirm whether permits or local approvals are required before travel beyond the core city.
- Carry Afghan afghani cash in small denominations. Do not assume international cards, ATMs or posted prices will be dependable; agree taxi and driver terms before setting off.
- Dress conservatively and follow local norms, particularly at mosques, mausoleums and public gardens. Ask before photographing people, and never photograph checkpoints, police, military sites or government buildings.
- Do not drive yourself or take the Kabul–Jalalabad road lightly. Its nominal travel time disguises a high accident risk and a security situation that can change quickly.
- Foreign visitors should not assume ordinary tourist freedoms around alcohol, nightlife or mixed-gender social spaces. Afghanistan’s current rules and enforcement climate are highly restrictive.
- Keep plans flexible. Opening times, access to cultural sites and even road movement are not reliably published in the way they are in established tourism destinations.
Worth leaving the city for

This is the best plausible escape from the city: water, greener air, fresh fish and the local restaurant/park scene offer more of a change of pace than another urban garden. It is also a better use of a driver than chasing dubious long-distance “must-sees.”

Hadda is the region’s strongest historical counterpoint to Jalalabad’s modern commercial character, with pre-Islamic material associated with the area. Go only if a local contact confirms what is open and accessible; do not assume a conventional, staffed museum visit.

About 15 km from Jalalabad, this developing planned city is interesting chiefly as an Amanullah-era/nation-building landmark and an urban-expansion contrast, not as a polished standalone attraction. Combine it with other local stops rather than treating it as a full excursion.
