Egypt: Cairo, the Pyramids & the Nile
Five thousand years of civilization, from the Great Pyramid to the Grand Egyptian Museum — the ancient world's greatest hits with modern comforts between them
- Duration
- 7 Days / 6 Nights
- Destinations
- Cairo · Giza · Luxor · Aswan
- Best season
- October – April
Egypt is the original bucket-list destination — and the reality still staggers, even when you've seen the photographs a thousand times. The Great Pyramid is larger than you imagined. The Valley of the Kings is more vivid. And the Nile, threading through the desert like a green ribbon, still feels like the lifeline it has been for five millennia. This journey pairs Cairo's pyramids and new Grand Egyptian Museum with a Nile cruise through the temple corridor between Luxor and Aswan — the trip people have been taking since Herodotus, now with rather better air conditioning.
Day 1
Arrival in Cairo
Private transfer from Cairo International Airport to Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, where your Nile-view suite frames the river traffic, the Cairo Tower, and the city's infinite sprawl. Settle in, then walk the Corniche at sunset. Evening: welcome dinner at Zitouni, the hotel's Middle Eastern restaurant — mezzeh of hummus, baba ghanoush, fatayer, and stuffed vine leaves, followed by a slow-grilled kofta platter.
- Stay: Four Seasons Cairo at Nile Plaza — Nile-view suite
- Culinary: Mezzeh dinner at Zitouni
Day 2
Giza Pyramids & the Grand Egyptian Museum
Your Egyptologist guide meets you at 7 AM for the Pyramids of Giza before the heat and crowds build — the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Sphinx, with the morning sun raking across the limestone faces. Enter the Great Pyramid's interior (arrange in advance) for the claustrophobic but extraordinary experience of standing in the King's Chamber. Continue to the Grand Egyptian Museum (opened 2024), the world's largest archaeological museum — Tutankhamun's complete treasury (over 5,000 objects), the royal mummy galleries, and the monumental statue court. Lunch at the museum's restaurant with pyramid views. Afternoon: the Saqqara necropolis (45 minutes south) for the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world's oldest monumental stone structure. Return to Cairo.
- Cultural: Giza Pyramids with Egyptologist guide (interior entry), Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara Step Pyramid
Day 3
Islamic Cairo & Khan el — Khalili
Morning in Islamic Cairo with your guide — the Mosque of Muhammad Ali (the Alabaster Mosque) inside the Citadel, Al-Azhar Mosque (founded in 970 AD, one of the world's oldest universities), and the Sultan Hassan Mosque for its towering Mamluk architecture. Descend into the Khan el-Khalili bazaar: copper lanterns, inlaid woodwork, spice stalls, and the 200-year-old El Fishawy café, where you sit on brass stools and drink Turkish coffee as merchants have done since Napoleon's troops visited. Lunch at Naguib Mahfouz restaurant in the heart of the Khan — named for the Nobel laureate who set his novels in these streets — pigeon stuffed with freekeh (roasted green wheat), a Cairo delicacy. Afternoon: the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square for the pieces not yet moved to the Grand Museum (check current status). Evening at leisure.
- Cultural: Islamic Cairo mosques, Citadel, Khan el-Khalili bazaar
- Culinary: Freekeh-stuffed pigeon at Naguib Mahfouz
Day 4
Cairo to Luxor: Valley of the Kings
Morning flight to Luxor (one hour). Your Egyptologist guide meets you for the West Bank: the Valley of the Kings (enter three tombs — the painted corridors of Ramses VI and Seti I's tomb are the most spectacular), the Temple of Hatshepsut carved into the cliff face, and the Colossi of Memnon. Cross to the East Bank for the Karnak Temple Complex at sunset — the Hypostyle Hall's 134 columns, each 23 meters tall, are among the most overwhelming architectural experiences on earth. Check into Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor, the 1886 colonial hotel where Howard Carter planned his Tutankhamun excavation — gardens on the Nile, Victorian verandas, and history in every corridor. Dinner on the hotel's terrace.
- Stay: Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor — Nile-view room
- Cultural: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Karnak at sunset
Day 5
Luxor to Aswan: Nile Cruise
Morning at Luxor Temple (connected to Karnak by an avenue of sphinxes now fully excavated and walkable). Board your Nile cruise vessel — a traditional dahabiya (sailing boat) or a premium river ship — and begin the journey south to Aswan. Sail past sugarcane fields, riverside villages, and feluccas tacking on the wind. Afternoon stop at the Temple of Edfu (dedicated to Horus, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt). Meals aboard: a lunch of Egyptian mezzeh, and a dinner of Nile fish with tahini and rice as the riverbanks slide past in the fading light.
- Scenic: Nile cruise (Luxor to Aswan)
- Cultural: Luxor Temple and Edfu Temple
Day 6
Aswan: Temples & Felucca
Morning visit to the Temple of Kom Ombo (dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek — the crocodile mummy museum is genuinely fascinating). Continue to Aswan and disembark. Visit Philae Temple on Agarika Island, reached by motorboat — the temple was rescued from rising Nile waters and reconstructed stone by stone on higher ground. Afternoon: a felucca sailing trip around Elephantine Island and Kitchener's Island (the botanical garden) — the quietest, most beautiful way to experience Aswan. Check into Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, the Nile's most romantic hotel — Agatha Christie wrote Death on the Nile here, and the terrace bar overlooking the river and the desert beyond is unchanged. Farewell dinner on the terrace: grilled lamb chops, koshari (Egypt's national street dish elevated to fine dining), and a view that has defined Egypt for travelers since the Victorian era.
- Stay: Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan — Nile-view suite
- Cultural: Kom Ombo, Philae Temple
- Scenic: Felucca sailing
- Culinary: Farewell terrace dinner
