First visit? Stay in Lecce Centro Storico.
For a first Puglia trip centered on wandering as well as sleeping well, Lecce gives the best balance: an exceptionally walkable historic centre, strong food and evening life, a major rail terminus, and workable access to Salento. It is less universally connected than Bari, but much more rewarding as a multi-night place to come home to.
The white-town setting, design-led stays and access to masserie and coast suit a higher-budget trip; accept the hills and station separation.
Bari has the broadest range of ordinary B&Bs, apartments, food and transport, so it is easier to control costs without renting a car.
It combines a manageable historic centre, waterfront walks, urban beaches and useful rail access without Polignano's concentrated crush.
For a summer beach-and-late-night trip, Gallipoli has the strongest party infrastructure; choose the old town for character or Baia Verde for proximity to clubs.
Trani supplies a beautiful harbour, good dining and rail access without Bari's intensity or Salento's resort-party scene.
Bari Centrale is Puglia's clearest rail hub, with mainline and local operators radiating from the city.
With a car and a few days, this is the rewarding slower itinerary of rural lanes, small towns and masserie rather than headline-sight collecting.
Avoid sleeping near Bari Centrale station blocks: They are practical for an early train but are less atmospheric than Murat or Bari Vecchia, and busy station zones warrant normal city pickpocket awareness.
Avoid sleeping near Lecce station and Via Taranto corridor: It can be cheaper, but it is outside the experience most visitors come for and adds an unlovely walk or taxi ride after dinner in the historic centre.
Avoid sleeping near Baia Verde, Gallipoli: Avoid it unless a summer club-and-beach holiday is explicitly the point: noise, seasonal crowds and car/parking pressure can overwhelm a cultural Puglia trip.
Avoid sleeping near Isolated countryside trulli without a car: The accommodation can be memorable, but travelers often underestimate the lack of walkable meals, services and reliable transport after arrival.
Pick the areas you want to be around — the hotels and tables below narrow to them.
Port city energy, real urban base
Bari is Puglia's practical capital rather than its prettiest postcard town. Bari Vecchia is a dense, lived-in maze of lanes, churches and orecchiette-making doorsteps; Murat is the gridded 19th-century centre between the old town, seafront and Bari Centrale. Together they make the region's most useful car-free base.
Vs. others: Pick Bari Vecchia and Murat over Lecce Centro Storico if you want the strongest rail connections and day-trip flexibility; pick Lecce if baroque streets and a slower evening scene matter more than transport reach.
Best for: first-timers, rail-day-trips, value, foodies, urban travelers
The lanes of Bari Vecchia can feel hectic and disorienting, especially on summer evenings. · Pickpocketing is a minor risk around busy city and station areas. · Murat has plenty of ordinary city streets and generic accommodation, not continuous historic charm.

Polignano is the cinematic limestone town above a small cove: ideal for a dramatic stroll, swim and aperitivo, but tiny enough that its centre can feel like a queue in peak season. It works best as a short, polished stop or a splurge stay rather than a comprehensive Puglia base.
Vs. others: Pick Polignano a Mare over Monopoli if cliff views and a compact romantic setting are the priority; pick Monopoli if you want a more lived-in old town and a more practical multi-night base.
Best for: couples, luxury, first-timers, short stays, photographers
The old town and beach cove become intensely crowded in warm weather. · Restaurants immediately around the viewpoints are often priced for the view. · Parking is difficult and the best-known beach is small.

Monopoli has an attractive fortified old town, little harbour, urban beaches and more everyday life than Polignano. It is still tourist-facing in summer, but it has enough shops, restaurants and normal residential texture to support a longer stay.
Vs. others: Pick Monopoli over Polignano a Mare if you want to stay several nights with more room to wander and eat; pick Polignano if the iconic clifftop setting is the main event.
Best for: families, foodies, beach-and-town travelers, value, return-visitors
Summer traffic and parking are frustrating near the centre. · The waterfront gets busy late into the evening. · It is less convenient than Bari for northbound and inland rail day trips.

This is the whitewashed, trullo-dotted interior that many visitors mean when they picture Puglia. Alberobello is the famous, highly managed version; Locorotondo and Cisternino feel smaller and more lived-in. Treat the valley as a rural circuit, not as one walkable town.
Vs. others: Pick the Itria Valley over Ostuni if trulli, rural stays and small hill towns are the goal; pick Ostuni if you want one more connected town with coast nearby.
Best for: families, couples, return-visitors, quiet, travelers with a car
Alberobello's trulli zones can feel more like a souvenir set than a normal town. · A trullo stay may be isolated, with no walkable dinner or evening life. · Narrow roads, parking restrictions and driving after wine tastings complicate the romantic rural picture.

Ostuni's brilliant-white old town is a hilltop maze with a strong restaurant, bar and boutique-hotel scene. It is more polished than many inland towns and makes a handsome base for combining Valle d'Itria excursions with the Adriatic coast.
Vs. others: Pick Ostuni over the Itria Valley if you want a single lively town rather than an isolated rural property; pick the Itria Valley if sleeping in a trullo and driving between villages is central to the trip.
Best for: couples, luxury, foodies, first-timers, return-visitors
The historic centre has steep, uneven lanes and steps. · Summer evenings are crowded and accommodation is expensive for the amount of space. · The station-to-centre separation makes it less convenient than it looks on a rail map.
See hotels in Ostuni Centro StoricoBaroque city, walkable Salento base
Lecce is the most satisfying all-round city break in southern Puglia: a substantial, lived-in university city wrapped around a remarkably coherent baroque centre. It has enough restaurants, evening life and services for several nights while still putting Salento's towns and coast within reach.
Vs. others: Pick Lecce Centro Storico over Bari Vecchia and Murat if you want a beautiful, walkable evening base and to concentrate on Salento; pick Bari if rail day trips across the whole region outrank atmosphere.
Best for: first-timers, foodies, nightlife, couples, travelers without a car
It is inland, so this is not a beach stay. · The baroque core is busy on summer nights and restaurant quality varies sharply around the most touristy squares. · Public transport is useful for some Salento towns but does not replace a car for flexible beach-hopping.

Gallipoli's old town sits on an island-like historic peninsula, with handsome lanes, seafood restaurants and sunset views. Baia Verde, south of town, is a beach strip associated with summer clubs and holiday apartments. They should not be treated as the same experience.
Vs. others: Pick Gallipoli over Otranto if sandy Ionian beaches, nightlife and a livelier summer scene appeal; pick Otranto if you prefer a smaller Adriatic old town and a calmer historic setting.
Best for: beach lovers, nightlife, groups, summer travelers, seafood fans
Baia Verde can be loud, crowded and party-oriented in high summer. · The old town's narrow streets and parking are difficult for drivers. · Outside peak season, the beach-strip atmosphere and services can feel thin.

Otranto is a handsome, compact walled port at Puglia's eastern edge, valued for its cathedral, harbour and access to the rocky Adriatic coast. It is more about sea, walks and a small historic centre than about city life or broad sightseeing density.
Vs. others: Pick Otranto over Gallipoli if you prefer an Adriatic setting, rocky coves and a calmer old town; pick Gallipoli for sandy beaches and bigger summer nightlife.
Best for: couples, families, quiet, beach lovers, return-visitors
It is remote from Puglia's main rail spine. · Summer crowds can overwhelm its very small centre. · The nearby coast is often rocky rather than the broad sandy beach some visitors expect.

Brindisi is an unflashy working port with a waterfront, Roman-column landmark and a useful airport/rail position. It is better understood as a convenient arrival, departure or one-night stop than as Puglia's most compelling place to linger.
Vs. others: Pick Brindisi over Bari Vecchia and Murat if flight convenience and a quieter port city matter most; pick Bari for more sights, food choice and stronger region-wide connections.
Best for: value, rail-day-trips, short stays, travelers using Brindisi Airport
The historic core is modest compared with Lecce, Ostuni or Bari Vecchia. · Some streets around transport infrastructure feel functional rather than atmospheric. · Its airport convenience does not make it a beach destination.

Trani is a graceful small port city whose Romanesque cathedral on the water is the headline, backed by a handsome harbour promenade and old Jewish quarter. It is more refined and restful than Bari, though less useful as a transport command centre.
Vs. others: Pick Trani over Bari Vecchia and Murat if you want a calmer, prettier northern-coast stay; pick Bari if you need frequent onward connections and a fuller city experience.
Best for: couples, quiet, foodies, return-visitors, rail-day-trips
It has limited big-city evening variety beyond the harbour strip. · The polished waterfront can feel quiet rather than lively outside dining hours. · It is not a practical base for the heel of Puglia.

The Gargano is Puglia's wilder, greener promontory: Vieste and Peschici provide whitewashed coastal drama, while the Foresta Umbra adds a wooded interior unlike the rest of the region. It rewards time and a car, not a rushed add-on to a Bari–Lecce itinerary.
Vs. others: Pick the Gargano over Otranto if you want nature, longer beaches and a more remote escape; pick Otranto if you need a compact town with easier access from Lecce.
Best for: families, beach lovers, quiet, nature lovers, return-visitors
Distances and winding roads make it time-consuming. · Summer resort traffic and beach crowds are substantial. · It is too remote to use as a base for the rest of Puglia.
See hotels in Gargano: Vieste, Peschici and the Foresta UmbraGritty maritime city, historically layered
Taranto is a large naval and industrial city split between the newer Borgo and the weathered old city on an island. It has serious Greek and maritime history and a real local identity, but it is not polished in the way Lecce or Ostuni are.
Vs. others: Pick Taranto over Ostuni if archaeology, a real working southern city and value interest you; pick Ostuni if you want the classic white-town experience and an easier leisure stay.
Best for: history enthusiasts, value, return-visitors, urban travelers
Parts of Città Vecchia are visibly neglected and feel far less polished than Puglia's tourist centres. · Pickpocketing is a minor urban risk, particularly around busy transport areas. · Industrial and naval infrastructure are part of the cityscape, not something a waterfront hotel can erase.
