Getting around
There is no metro or light rail, and Mountain Metro buses are too thin and slow for a scenery-heavy visit. Downtown, Old Colorado City, and Manitou are each walkable; the distances between them are not. Rent a car for Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, North Cheyenne Cañon, and day trips. Useful exceptions: the free ZEB Downtown shuttle; fare-free Route 3 between Downtown, Old Colorado City, and Manitou’s Dillon Mobility Hub; and the seasonal free Route 33 Manitou Shuttle. Rideshare works for isolated hops, not as a full itinerary strategy. Do not book a hotel merely because it has a Colorado Springs address—airport and far-north properties can be 20–35 minutes from Garden of the Gods.
When to go
Mid-September through early October is the best overall window: pleasant days, thinner crowds, and regional foliage, though Pikes Peak can turn wintry before town does. Late May through August has the fullest mountain access and longest days, but also peak crowds and routine afternoon lightning, hail, and flash-flood risk. Winter is good for museums, lower rates, and clear Garden of the Gods light, but do not count on Pikes Peak being open.
Book before you land
The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway — book at least two weeks ahead for summer weekends; it is the clearest sellout risk. · Cheyenne Mountain Zoo — timed tickets are required and busy dates sell out. · Manitou Incline — free, but reservation and signed waiver required; book morning weekend slots promptly. · Pikes Peak Highway — May 22 through September 30, driving beyond Mile 7 requires a $2 timed-entry permit per vehicle in addition to admission. · Seven Falls — buy online at least 24 hours ahead; parking is at Norris Penrose Event Center, followed by the included shuttle.
- Treat altitude seriously. Eat, hydrate, limit alcohol, and keep arrival day easy; descending is the real remedy if symptoms worsen.
- Summer afternoons bring real lightning and flash-flood danger. Start early, carry water and layers, and get off ridges and out of exposed canyons before storms build.
- The Manitou Incline is an extreme workout: about 2,000 feet of gain in under a mile. Use the Dillon Mobility Hub or shuttle instead of improvising parking.
- Stay on designated trails, yield to horses, keep right, and announce passes. Red-rock terrain is fragile, not a playground.
- Do not consume cannabis in public. Parks, trailheads, streets, and hotel balconies are not legal loopholes.
- Lock or hide valuables at trailheads, especially at Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon, and North Cheyenne Cañon.
Worth leaving the city for
Royal Gorge / Cañon CityFull day; roughly 3–3½ hours of round-trip driving from Downtown before activities.
Go for a true change of scale: canyon walls, Arkansas River rafting, or the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. It beats a fourth day of minor Colorado Springs attractions, but only if you actually raft or take the train rather than merely paying for the bridge park.
Florissant Fossil Beds National MonumentHalf day; about 2½–3 hours door-to-door, including roughly one hour each way.
A quiet, distinctive high-country counterpoint to the city, with petrified redwood stumps and fossil beds. It is better than another paid roadside attraction when you want a thoughtful half-day rather than an alpine spectacle.
DenverFull day; Bustang takes about two hours each way from Downtown Colorado Springs to Denver Union Station.
Worth it only after you have covered Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak or Manitou, and one Colorado Springs cultural stop. Denver has stronger museums, dining, and urban neighborhoods; otherwise, the transit time is a bad trade on a first short visit.
