Eat
Eat on Downtown Maine Street, Brunswick’s small but increasingly serious restaurant strip and the only district where meals, Bowdoin, the station, and lodging can sensibly be combined on foot. It is a college-town scene rather than Portland-scale dining: expect independent, seasonal Maine cooking and a quiet evening, not endless choice or late-night energy. For a waterside change of scene, Mere Point and Middle Bay can work for a meal when something is open, but it requires a car and should not be treated as a dining district.
Maine lobster, especially a straightforward lobster roll or whole steamed lobster in season; ask whether the roll is served chilled with mayonnaise or warm with butter if you have a preference. · Midcoast seafood beyond lobster—look for locally landed fish, oysters, clams, and scallops when menus identify the source and season. · Seasonal New England cooking: Maine potatoes and other local produce, chowders, and hearty cool-weather dishes are more representative than trying to force a coastal-seafood meal year-round. · The Maine breakfast-and-bakery tradition is useful for a day around Bowdoin or before a coastal drive: coffee, pastries, bagels, and a substantial breakfast are often a better early start than waiting for lunch service. · Casual beer-and-seafood or pub-style dinner is the natural evening rhythm; Brunswick is better for an unhurried meal than a bar crawl.
