Miami, Miami Beach and the nearby barrier islands
Florida’s best urban-beach combination: Cuban and Latin American food, Art Deco, galleries, nightlife and neighborhoods that are far more interesting than South Beach alone. It is expensive and traffic-heavy, but no other Florida city has this much energy.
Everglades
Florida’s essential wild landscape of sawgrass, mangroves, birds and alligators. Pick the entrance for your route: Shark Valley is the easy Miami day trip, while Homestead/Flamingo and Gulf Coast suit onward drives.
Florida Keys
The Overseas Highway delivers the state’s best road trip: reef trips and diving in the Upper Keys, quieter water time around Marathon and Big Pine, then the theatrical finish at Key West. Go slowly; this is not a Miami day trip.
Key West and Dry Tortugas National Park
Key West earns its place for conch-house streets, Cuban-Caribbean history, cycling and late-night excess; Dry Tortugas adds Fort Jefferson and the state’s most memorable water day trip. The ferry is long, limited and worth booking early.
Orlando and Lake Buena Vista
This is the unapologetic theme-park capital: Disney, Universal and enough resort infrastructure to make family logistics easy. It is costly and artificial, but nowhere else in Florida competes for big-ticket rides and multigenerational entertainment.
Space Coast
Kennedy Space Center is the serious draw, with Cape Canaveral launches and Cocoa Beach surf giving it a useful change of pace from Orlando. Stay overnight if a launch window or an early space-center visit matters.
Tampa Bay
A practical Gulf Coast mix of Tampa’s food and sports, Ybor’s cigar-making history, St. Petersburg’s museums and Clearwater’s big resort beach. Base in St. Pete for a more walkable, creative trip; choose Clearwater only if beach convenience is the priority.
Sarasota, Anna Maria Island and the Southwest Gulf
This is the slower, more polished Gulf Coast: Sarasota for dining and arts, barrier islands for beach days, and Anna Maria for low-rise old-Florida atmosphere. It works best for travelers happy to rent a car and keep the pace low.
St. Augustine and the First Coast
Florida’s strongest history-and-walkability stop, built around Spanish-colonial streets and Castillo de San Marcos rather than resorts. The compact core is touristy on weekends, but it is a smart two-night contrast to Orlando.
Florida Panhandle
Pensacola, 30A, Destin and Apalachicola offer Florida’s whitest sand, clear Gulf water and a distinctly Southern character. It is a separate trip from Miami and the Keys, not a casual add-on.
Classic first-timer sampler
8 nightsOrlando and Lake Buena Vista → Miami, Miami Beach and the nearby barrier islands → Key West and Dry Tortugas National Park
For travelers who want the headline Florida mix of parks, city-and-beach Miami, and a Keys finale. Keep Key West to one night only if Dry Tortugas is not a priority; otherwise add time and cut an Orlando park day.
Plan this routeSouth Florida and Keys, no theme parks
7 nightsMiami, Miami Beach and the nearby barrier islands → Everglades → Florida Keys → Key West and Dry Tortugas National Park
The best compact route for food, nightlife, reef time and road-trip scenery. Spend two nights in the middle Keys rather than racing straight from Miami to Key West.
Plan this routeParks, rockets and Gulf beaches
9 nightsOrlando and Lake Buena Vista → Space Coast → Tampa Bay
A family-friendly alternative to the Miami–Keys circuit: theme parks first, Kennedy Space Center and Cocoa Beach next, then a proper Gulf Coast recovery in St. Petersburg or Clearwater.
Plan this routeDeeper Florida peninsula road trip
14-16 nightsSt. Augustine and the First Coast → Orlando and Lake Buena Vista → Tampa Bay → Sarasota, Anna Maria Island and the Southwest Gulf → Everglades → Florida Keys → Key West and Dry Tortugas National Park
The coherent long peninsula trip for travelers who want more than headline attractions. It moves south in a logical line and treats the Everglades as a real stop rather than a rushed detour; leave the Panhandle for a separate trip.
