Getting in

Colorado Springs Airport (COS): Take a rental car or Uber/Lyft/taxi: downtown is about 15–20 minutes and usually costs roughly $20–35 before tip in normal demand. Do not try to make the airport bus work with luggage; Route 37 only goes to Hancock Plaza, not downtown.
Denver International Airport (DEN): For a no-car budget transfer, take RTD’s A Line to Denver Union Station (about 37 minutes; $10 airport day pass), then Bustang South Line from Gate B4 to Colorado Springs Downtown Terminal ($12 one way; roughly 1 hour 15–30 minutes). Allow 2¾–3½ hours door to door. Direct rideshare only makes sense when several people can split a surge-prone fare.
Intercity rail: There is no Amtrak or intercity passenger rail station in Colorado Springs. From Denver or Pueblo, Bustang is the practical public-transport option.

Getting around

There is no metro, light rail, or transit grid worth building a vacation around. Mountain Metro buses are cheap but thin; Route 3 is fare-free between downtown Colorado Springs and downtown Manitou, and the downtown Zeb circulator is free. Rent a car for Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Canyon, Florissant, Royal Gorge, or a multi-neighborhood itinerary. Downtown, Old Colorado City and central Manitou are walkable individually, not as one connected city. Do not depend on rideshare from remote trailheads or the Pikes Peak summit; in Manitou, use peripheral parking and the free Route 33 shuttle rather than hunting for close spaces.

When to go

Late May–June and September–early October are the strongest windows: good hiking temperatures, clearer views and fewer crowds than peak summer. Summer mornings are for outdoor plans; July and August afternoons bring regular thunderstorms and high-altitude sun that hits harder than the temperature suggests. Spring can swing from 70°F to snow overnight, while winter is fine for town and museums but not for a guaranteed Pikes Peak summit.

Book before you land

Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway — the real sellout; book 2–4 weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays, longer for preferred morning departures. · Cheyenne Mountain Zoo — timed tickets are required and busy dates sell out; book 5–7 days ahead. · Pikes Peak Highway — timed-entry reservations are required May 22–September 30, 2026; reserve a desired morning slot a few days ahead and recheck weather on the day. · Seven Falls — use timed online admission at least 24 hours ahead; parking is off-site and the shuttle is mandatory. · U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum — prebook for busy summer Saturdays, though same-day walk-ups are usually possible if capacity remains. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Acclimatize before going big: town sits around 6,000 feet and Pikes Peak reaches 14,115. Hydrate, go easy on alcohol, and do not schedule the Incline or summit trip immediately after arriving from sea level.
Treat afternoon thunderstorms as a hard deadline. Finish exposed hikes early, get off ridges, and carry layers even in July.
Garden of the Gods is free, but midday parking is miserable. Go at sunrise or late afternoon; use the free seasonal shuttle in summer.
Manitou parking is managed and paid during the day. Use the free shuttle for the Incline and Cog corridor; parking becomes free after 6 p.m.
Cannabis may be legal to buy for adults 21+, but public consumption is not. Do not use it in parks, sidewalks, cars, federal land, or most hotels; never drive impaired or take it through an airport or across state lines.
On multi-use trails, yield properly—especially to horses in Red Rock Canyon Open Space—and stay on legal trails.

Worth leaving the city for

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument3½–6 hours door to door; about one hour each way by car.

The best quiet counterweight to Colorado Springs: petrified redwood stumps, fossil-rich shale, an 1878 homestead and real hiking without the crowds. Pick it for geology and solitude, not dramatic postcard views.

Royal Gorge Bridge & Park / Cañon City5–7 hours realistically; about one hour each way by car, plus parking, lines, the park and any railroad ride.

Worth it for engineered spectacle, the Arkansas River canyon, families, or the scenic railroad—not because it outclasses the city’s essential first-timer pairing of Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak. Go only with a car.
