Boulder follows standard U.S. entry rules. Travelers from Visa Waiver Program countries can generally visit for tourism for up to 90 days with an approved ESTA, though eligibility can be affected by nationality and travel history; Canadians generally do not need ESTA for ordinary tourism, while many other visitors need a B-2 or B-1/B-2 visa. Verify your exact situation with U.S. State Department and CBP before booking non-refundable travel.
Getting in
- Denver International Airport: The only airport that makes sense for most Boulder visitors. Rent a car here for Nederland, Lyons, Estes Park or Rocky Mountain National Park; if staying only in Boulder, the direct RTD AB1 airport bus is usually better value than parking a rental downtown.
Getting around
Central Boulder is genuinely walkable and bikeable, with extensive paths and usable local transit. The Flatiron Flyer is useful for Denver, but public transport does not make mountain towns or Rocky Mountain National Park easy; use a car for Nederland, Lyons, Longmont, Estes Park and RMNP. In winter, check road conditions, forecast and tire requirements rather than assuming a rental car makes mountain driving routine.
Money
The currency is the U.S. dollar. Cards and tap-to-pay are routine; keep a little cash for small purchases and tips. Budget for 18–22% at sit-down restaurants and recognize that Boulder is a pricey Front Range base for lodging, meals and rental cars.
Book before you land

- Start hikes and RMNP days early: it avoids heat, afternoon lightning, packed trailheads and park bottlenecks.
- Treat altitude seriously after arrival. Boulder is already high, while Nederland and RMNP are substantially higher; hydrate, ease into exertion and avoid scheduling a major hike immediately after flying in.
- Do not rely on a car for downtown convenience. Parking is finite, and the central core is easier on foot or by bike.
- Mountain weather changes quickly. Check conditions before heading west, and avoid driving mountain roads after dark during a storm.
- CU football weekends can make campus and central Boulder louder, busier and more expensive than usual.
