Rattanakosin / the Old City
The non-negotiable first stop: Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho are Bangkok at its most royal and ceremonial. Start at opening; by late morning the heat and crowds become a tax.
Yaowarat, Song Wat and Talat Noi
Bangkok’s best dense-city wandering: old shophouses, shrines, river-trading lanes and serious eating. Do Song Wat and Talat Noi by day, then tackle Yaowarat after dark.
Thonburi, Wat Arun, Wang Lang and Kudi Chin
The west bank gives you Wat Arun’s riverfront drama, canal-side texture and neighborhoods that feel less towered-over than central Bangkok. It needs deliberate routing, but it is worth the effort.
Chao Phraya Riverside / Charoen Krung / Khlong San
Use this stretch for boats, sunset views, galleries and a reset from Bangkok’s street-level intensity. Pair it with Talat Noi or Thonburi rather than spending a full day inside ICONSIAM.
Banglamphu / Khao San / Phra Athit
A cheap, sociable base near the Old City, with street food, bars and easy river access. Khao San is a party scene; Phra Athit and Rambuttri are the smarter choices if you want sleep.
Siam, Chidlom, Pratunam and Ratchaprasong
This is Bangkok’s practical air-conditioned core: malls, food courts, fashion and excellent BTS connections. Useful in heat or rain, but one mall stop is generally enough.
Sukhumvit: Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo and Ekkamai
The easiest all-round hotel corridor, with the best mix of rail access, restaurants, bars and late-night options. Treat it as a base, not the whole Bangkok experience.
Silom, Sathorn and Lumphini
A more balanced central base than Sukhumvit: strong transport, good restaurants, Lumphini Park and quick access to the river and Chinatown. It is polished and functional rather than picturesque.
Ari and Chatuchak
Ari is for cafés, independent restaurants and a more lived-in north-Bangkok mood; Chatuchak is for a focused weekend-market mission. Go to the market with a target, not vague optimism.
Bang Krachao
Bangkok’s best green escape, with elevated cycling paths, canals and enough foliage to make the city feel briefly far away. It is a half-day reset, not a major sightseeing day.
Koh Kret
A softer river outing in Nonthaburi, known for Mon culture, pottery and weekend grazing. Choose it when you want to slow down rather than tick off another headline sight.
Ayutthaya
The one Bangkok day trip that genuinely earns a full day: ruined temple complexes, river scenery and the scale of a former Siamese capital. Go early, or stay overnight if rushed day trips annoy you.

3 daysRattanakosin / the Old City → Thonburi, Wat Arun, Wang Lang and Kudi Chin → Yaowarat, Song Wat and Talat Noi → Siam, Chidlom, Pratunam and Ratchaprasong → Silom, Sathorn and Lumphini
For first-timers who want the essential temples, river, Chinatown and a glimpse of modern Bangkok without wasting days crossing the city in traffic.

Adds a proper Thonburi day and Ayutthaya only after giving Bangkok’s core neighborhoods enough time. Swap Ayutthaya for Ari and Chatuchak if this is a weekend shopping trip.

Stay in one Bangkok base, revisit neighborhoods at different times and give Ayutthaya one or two unhurried nights. This is for food, shopping, galleries and rain-rescheduling—not a marathon of malls and floating-market tours.
