First visit? Stay in Centro / Puerta del Sol.
It is the best compromise in a vertical city: walkable to Casco Vello and the harbour, well supplied with hotels and food, and less awkward with luggage than sleeping deep in the old town. It also keeps both the ferry pier and the rail-station corridor manageable by bus or taxi.
The central waterfront has the stronger concentration of smart, full-service central hotels and puts ferry departures close at hand.
This is the practical accommodation cluster around the rail hub; accept a less atmospheric setting and a downhill/uphill commute to the core.
Choose it for beach time, more space and a slower pace; choose Centro instead if sightseeing and ferries matter more than the beach.
Its bars and restaurants make it Vigo’s natural evening base, with the trade-off of noise and steep cobbled lanes.
Bouzas has a calmer, village-like rhythm and good dining, while remaining connected to the centre by bus.
Staying by the station minimizes departure-day friction; it is a functional base rather than a scenic one.
After seeing the centre, Bouzas offers a more lived-in slice of Vigo and a different evening routine without leaving the city.
Avoid sleeping near The immediate traffic-heavy blocks around Urzáiz / Vialia Station: They are fine for an early train and often good value, but travelers expecting old-town ambience, harbour views or a pleasant late-night stroll can be disappointed.
Avoid sleeping near Upper O Castro / Gran Vía slopes: A residential stay here can mean repeated steep walks or buses to nearly everything a short-stay visitor wants to see.
Avoid sleeping near Teis / A Guía: It is a legitimate local district, but it is too removed from the harbour, Casco Vello and rail/ferry routine to be a default tourist base.
Avoid sleeping near The noisiest bar lanes of Casco Vello: They are excellent for going out, not necessarily for sleeping; book only if your room has sound insulation and late noise will not bother you.
Pick the areas you want to be around — the hotels and tables below narrow to them.
Central, practical, and genuinely walkable
The sensible heart of Vigo: the shopping streets around Príncipe and Urzáiz meet the old-town edge at Puerta del Sol, with a broad choice of hotels, cafés and everyday services. It is not the prettiest part of the city, but it makes Vigo’s steep layout much easier to manage.
Vs. others: Pick Centro / Puerta del Sol over Casco Vello if you want flatter, more practical streets and more hotel choice; pick Casco Vello if atmosphere and evening bar-hopping matter more.
Best for: first-timers, luxury, foodies, families, rail-day-trips
Traffic and retail streets make it feel more like a working city than a romantic old town. · The descent to the harbour is easy; returning uphill can be tiring. · Restaurants near the busiest central streets can be more generic than the city’s better local options.
See hotels in Centro / Puerta del SolSteep stone lanes, bars, and character
Vigo’s old town climbs sharply above the harbour: compact stone lanes, small squares, older buildings and plenty of places to eat and drink. It is the city’s most atmospheric wandering district, but it remains part of a hard-working port city rather than a polished heritage set piece.
Vs. others: Pick Casco Vello over Centro / Puerta del Sol if you want historic texture and bars at your doorstep; pick Centro / Puerta del Sol for easier access, quieter nights and less climbing.
Best for: first-timers, nightlife, foodies, return-visitors, couples
The hill and uneven paving are punishing with suitcases or limited mobility. · Some streets are lively late, especially around bars. · Tourist-facing terraces can be uneven in quality and value.

The lower city by the port is Vigo at its most functional: broad waterfront streets, business hotels, marina-and-ferry access and a mix of offices, restaurants and traffic. It is a strong logistical base for the Cíes Islands or Cangas, not a picturesque seaside promenade throughout.
Vs. others: Pick Areal / Harbourfront over Urzáiz / Vialia if ferry access and a flatter walk to the old town matter; pick Urzáiz / Vialia if trains and value accommodation are the priority.
Best for: rail-day-trips, families, luxury, travelers taking ferries, short stays
Port traffic and commercial activity reduce the romance. · Some blocks feel businesslike and quiet after offices close. · The waterfront is not a substitute for staying beside a swimming beach.
See hotels in Areal / HarbourfrontRail convenience above the centre
The station-and-shopping corridor is the practical choice for arrivals, departures and generally simpler hotel prices. Vialia has made the rail hub useful, but this is a busy urban slope rather than the part of Vigo most visitors came to wander.
Vs. others: Pick Urzáiz / Vialia over Areal / Harbourfront if train convenience and value outweigh ambience; pick Areal / Harbourfront if you will use ferries or want the old town closer.
Best for: value, rail-day-trips, business travelers, short stays, solo travelers
The immediate station approaches are busy, noisy and visually ordinary. · The slope into the centre is noticeable, particularly after a day trip. · It has less evening character than Casco Vello or Bouzas.
See hotels in Urzáiz / Vialia StationOld fishing village, lived-in and slower
Once a separate fishing village, Bouzas keeps a low-rise, local feel west of the centre, with a small historic core, seafood-oriented dining and a more residential pace. It is one of Vigo’s best alternatives to the central hotel zone, provided you do not need to be beside the station or ferry pier.
Vs. others: Pick Bouzas over Casco Vello if you want a calmer, more local evening and seafood focus; pick Casco Vello if you want the major sights, bars and ferries on foot.
Best for: quiet, foodies, families, return-visitors, couples
Less central means more dependence on buses or taxis at night. · Its small scale can feel too quiet for travelers seeking constant activity. · Some dining is geared to visitors as well as locals, so choose carefully rather than assuming every terrace is a bargain.

This is the beach-facing side of Vigo: Samil is the city’s best-known urban beach, while Alcabre is a greener, lower-density stretch nearby. It suits a slower trip and sea views far better than a sight-packed first visit, but it is disconnected from the old-town-and-ferry routine.
Vs. others: Pick Samil / Alcabre over Bouzas if swimming and beach time are the goal; pick Bouzas if you want a local neighbourhood with easier access to central Vigo.
Best for: families, quiet, beach lovers, summer travelers, drivers
It is far from Vigo’s core sights and ferry departure area. · The atmosphere is seasonal and can feel subdued outside beach weather. · An urban beach stay does not eliminate the city’s rainy Atlantic weather.
See hotels in Samil / AlcabrePark views above the commercial city
The slopes around O Castro and the upper Gran Vía corridor combine Vigo’s main central green viewpoint with residential and commercial streets. Come for a break from the harbour and broad views over the ría; sleep here only if you specifically value a residential address over central convenience.
Vs. others: Pick O Castro / Gran Vía over Casco Vello if you want park space and a more residential feel; pick Casco Vello if this is your first Vigo stay and you want to walk to the action.
Best for: quiet, families, walkers, return-visitors
The climb is the defining practical issue. · It is more useful as a daytime wander or viewpoint than as a tourist base. · Accommodation is less concentrated than in the centre, harbour or station area.
See hotels in O Castro / Gran VíaLocal eastern Vigo with a hilltop view
East of the centre, Teis is a working, residential side of Vigo, with A Guía offering a hilltop lookout rather than a dense cluster of attractions. It gives a more everyday view of the city but is not where most short-stay visitors should plant themselves.
Vs. others: Pick Teis / A Guía over Samil / Alcabre if you want a local east-side viewpoint rather than beach time; pick Samil / Alcabre for a more relaxing coastal stay.
Best for: return-visitors, quiet, travelers with a car, walkers
There is little reason for most visitors to stay here instead of centrally. · The terrain is hilly and the setting is more residential and industrial than scenic. · Night-time services and dining are less useful to a visitor than in the centre.
