Sibiu
Base · 1–3 days
The essential base: spend two proper days in the Upper and Lower Town, then use it for the ASTRA open-air museum in Dumbrava Sibiului. The main squares are polished; the better texture is down the Passage of the Stairs and through Lower Town.
Mărginimea Sibiului
Short stop · 1 day
The county’s strongest living rural landscape: sheep-farming villages, dairy cooking, hayfields and mountain-backed roads. Build a slow loop around Rășinari, Sibiel and Gura Râului rather than trying to tick off all 18 villages.
Bâlea Valley and Bâlea Lake
Short stop · 1 day
The big high-mountain day, with the northern Transfăgărășan approach, waterfalls and Făgăraș scenery. Give it a full day and keep it weather-flexible; this is not an add-on between village stops.
Biertan and the Târnava Valley villages
Base · 2 days
Come for Biertan’s formidable fortified church, then stay for quieter Valea Viilor, Richiș and Moșna. This is the county’s best heritage-driving circuit, but church access can be irregular, so avoid a tightly timed schedule.
Păltiniș and the Cindrel Mountains
Short stop · 1 day
The practical mountain escape from Sibiu, with hiking and biking in summer and snow sports in winter. Păltiniș itself is a functional resort, so use it as a trailhead rather than expecting village charm.
Mediaș
Short stop · 1 day
A quieter Saxon market town and the most sensible northern base if Biertan’s guesthouse options do not suit. Pair it with Valea Viilor and Biertan rather than treating it as a destination with Sibiu-level sightseeing.
Hârtibaciu Valley and Agnita
Short stop · 1 day
Rolling meadow country and former Saxon villages with far less polish than the Biertan circuit. Go for cycling, birds and empty back roads, not for a dense list of monuments or easy public transport.
Ocna Sibiului
A straightforward salt-lake swimming stop west of Sibiu. It works as a warm-weather recovery day for families or after hiking; do not make an overnight of it for the town itself.
Avrig and Porumbacu de Sus
Short stop · 1 day
A gentler Făgăraș foothill alternative, combining Avrig’s Brukenthal-era estate and gardens with rural valleys near Porumbacu. Use it to break up a mountain-focused drive, not as a substitute for Bâlea’s high-country drama.
Essential Sibiu County, car-light
4 daysSibiu (2 days) → Mărginimea Sibiului (1 day) → Păltiniș and the Cindrel Mountains (1 day)
The right short break for a first visit without a car. Use Sibiu for the Old Town and ASTRA, then choose one pastoral-village day and one accessible mountain day. Do not try to force Biertan or Bâlea into this itinerary.

7 daysSibiu (2 days) → Mărginimea Sibiului (1 day) → Bâlea Valley and Bâlea Lake (1 day) → Biertan and the Târnava Valley villages (2 days) → Mediaș (1 day)
The best balanced county trip for drivers: Sibiu’s urban core, one proper shepherd-village loop, a weather-flexible Bâlea day, then enough time in the north to see Biertan, Valea Viilor, Richiș and Moșna without treating church keys as a timed attraction.

For travelers who want trails and village roads rather than a museum-heavy city break. A rental car is essential. Keep Bâlea movable according to weather, and use Avrig and Porumbacu as a gentler foothill counterweight to the high road.

For travelers who want the county rather than a Transylvanian highlights reel. The extra days absorb rural opening-hour uncertainty, give Bâlea a second weather window if needed, and make room for the quiet Hârtibaciu back roads before returning to Sibiu.
