Victoria Island and Oniru
Base · 4–7 nights
The most practical first base for Lagos: strong hotels, serious restaurants, galleries, events and nightlife, with workable access to Ikoyi, Lagos Island and Lekki. It is expensive and traffic-heavy, but far less punishing logistically than trying to stitch the city together from the Mainland.
Ikoyi
Base · 1–2 days
A greener, quieter and more polished version of the Island, with waterfront views, high-end dining and calmer hotels. Choose it for comfort and a slower rhythm, not for being close to every attraction.
Lagos Island
Short stop · 1 day
This is the old mercantile core around Marina, Onikan, Tinubu Square and Balogun: Freedom Park, museum stops, markets and the clearest sense of Lagos before its current entertainment boom. Go with a guide or local host if you want to tackle the market streets properly.
Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate
Base · 1–6 days
The established western Lekki strip is where Lagos's gallery, restaurant, club and beach-club scene feels most current. It is the right base for Nike Art Gallery, Lekki Conservation Centre and late nights, provided you stay near the places you actually plan to use.
Ajah and Ibeju-Lekki
Base · 1–3 nights
The eastward beach and resort corridor offers more room, quieter coastal scenery and a reason to leave central Lagos behind for a night or two. Treat it as an overnight escape, not a casual beach day from Victoria Island or the airport.
Ikeja
Short stop · 1 night
The airport-side Mainland hub is useful for arrival or departure nights, business, and the New Afrika Shrine orbit. It is a practical stop rather than a substitute for staying on the Island if your trip is centered on galleries, restaurants and nightlife there.
Yaba and Surulere
Short stop · 1 day
This Mainland creative belt trades polish for a more everyday view of Lagos: cafés, tech and university culture in Yaba, plus Surulere's deep music, film and Nollywood associations. It works best as a focused day or evening, not as a supposedly easy bridge to Island nightlife.
Badagry
Base · 1–2 days
Lagos State's essential heritage excursion confronts the transatlantic slave trade through the Badagry Heritage Museum, Brazilian Barracoon, Vlekete Slave Market and Gberefu sites. Give it a full day, leave early and use a knowledgeable guide; this is not a quick photo stop.
Epe
Base · 1–2 days
A lagoon-and-market town beyond the main Lekki development, Epe gives a quieter, fishing-and-waterfront view of the state. Pair it with an Ibeju-Lekki overnight if you want a genuine change of pace rather than a long, strained day trip.
First-contact Lagos
4 nightsVictoria Island and Oniru (4 nights (base)) → Lagos Island (1 focused day) → Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate (1 full day and evening) → Ikoyi (1 relaxed half-day)
The right short first visit: stay on the Island, tackle old Lagos with a guide, then give Lekki its own day. Skip Badagry rather than turning four nights into a traffic endurance test.
Plan this routeClassic first visit: culture, food and heritage
7 nightsVictoria Island and Oniru (6 nights (main base)) → Ikoyi (1 day) → Lagos Island (1 full day) → Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate (1 full day and evening) → Badagry (1 full day) → Yaba and Surulere (1 day or late-afternoon-to-night outing) → Ajah and Ibeju-Lekki (1 night)
This is the sensible seven-night Lagos itinerary: Island culture and restaurants first, one properly paced Badagry day, then a Mainland music or creative-culture outing. Finish with an east-coast resort night only if you want the change of scene; otherwise keep the final night in Victoria Island and recover.
Plan this routeLagos State beyond the city
9 nightsLekki Phase 1 and Ikate (6 nights (main base)) → Lagos Island (1 full day) → Yaba and Surulere (1 day or evening) → Badagry (1 full day) → Ajah and Ibeju-Lekki (2 nights) → Epe (1 slow day trip or overnight excursion from the eastern coast) → Ikeja (1 night if departing early)
For travelers who want Lagos State rather than just Lagos nightlife. Use Lekki as the urban base, take Badagry seriously as a full-day heritage excursion, then slow down on the eastern coast and in Epe. The Ikeja night is a practical insurance policy for an early flight, not a sightseeing finale.
Plan this routeSlow return visit: two-base Lagos State
12-14 nightsVictoria Island and Oniru (7 nights (main base)) → Ikoyi (1-2 unhurried days) → Lagos Island (1 full day) → Lekki Phase 1 and Ikate (2 days and evenings) → Yaba and Surulere (1 day or evening) → Badagry (2 nights, with 1 full heritage day) → Ajah and Ibeju-Lekki (3 nights) → Epe (1-2 days from the eastern-coast base)
A route for repeat visitors who would rather leave room for weather, performances, restaurants and traffic than collect districts. Keep one Island base, then make a deliberate regional move west to Badagry and east to the Ibeju-Lekki/Epe coast; do not add extra hotel changes in the city.
