Visas & entry
U.S., Canadian, UK, EU and many other visa-waiver passport holders normally need an NZeTA before travel rather than a Visitor Visa; stays are generally up to three months per visit, with UK citizens potentially eligible for up to six months. Australian citizens travelling on Australian passports do not need an NZeTA or Visitor Visa; allow at least 72 hours for NZeTA processing and verify current requirements before booking.
Getting in
Getting around
A rental car is the best tool for most of the country, especially the South Island, but distances are slower than maps suggest and weather, roadworks and fatigue matter. Domestic flights are often the sensible shortcut between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown; use them rather than forcing a ferry-and-drive connection on a short trip. The Wellington–Picton ferry is worth taking when you have time for Marlborough or a deeper self-drive route, not because it is automatically the efficient choice.
Money
New Zealand uses the New Zealand dollar (NZD). Cards and contactless payments work almost everywhere, though carry a little cash or a backup card for remote areas and small operators; tipping is not expected, though it is welcomed for notably good service.
