Kathmandu
Base · 1–5 nights
The essential base for the valley: Durbar Square, Asan, Swayambhunath, food, hotels, guides and trek logistics. It is loud and congested, but its density is the point rather than a flaw to route around.
Boudha and Pashupatinath
Base · 3 days
Kathmandu’s strongest sacred pairing: evening kora around Boudhanath, then the living Hindu pilgrimage and cremation grounds at Pashupatinath. Stay in Boudha if you want a calmer base than Thamel without leaving the city.
Patan
Base · 2 days
The best single Durbar Square in the valley, backed by dense Newar lanes, bahals, metalwork workshops and serious food. Choose Patan for atmosphere and wandering, not because it avoids Kathmandu traffic.
Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan
Base · 2 days
Bhaktapur has the valley’s most intact-feeling historic streets, pottery squares and wood carving; Changu Narayan makes the right hilltop add-on. Sleep in Bhaktapur if possible—its early morning is much better than its midday tour-bus crush.
Kirtipur and Khokana
A slower, lived-in Newar counterpoint to the major monument zones, best for traditional streets, hill walks and regional cooking. Go for texture rather than polished interpretation or a checklist of headline sights.
Dhulikhel, Panauti and Namo Buddha
Base · 1–2 days
The useful Kavre-hills escape from the valley: Dhulikhel for an overnight and ridge walks, Panauti for a compact old town, and Namo Buddha for a contemplative monastery stop. Nagarkot is easier for sunrise, but Dhulikhel is the more rewarding base.
Chitwan National Park: Sauraha and Meghauli
Base · 2–3 nights
Bagmati’s necessary change of scene: rhino country, rivers, grassland, birds and Tharu culture. Base in practical Sauraha or quieter, lodge-led Meghauli, and give it at least two nights—one night is mostly transit.
Langtang Valley and Kyanjin Gompa
Base · 10 days
The province’s defining Himalayan trek: Tamang villages, forest, high pasture and big Langtang Lirung views, culminating at Kyanjin. Treat it as a proper 8–10-night high-altitude trip with road buffers, not a Kathmandu side excursion.
Nuwakot and Trishuli
A low-key heritage-and-hills diversion northwest of Kathmandu, centered on Nuwakot Durbar and the Trishuli corridor. It is best for travelers who have already done the obvious valley circuit and can arrange transport deliberately.
Daman, Palung and Hetauda
A quiet southwestern ridge-and-foothills detour, with Daman’s Himalayan panorama potential and Palung’s agricultural valley character. Go only if you value empty roads and a highland night more than efficient sightseeing; visibility makes or breaks Daman.
Classic valley and Chitwan
8 days / 7 nightsKathmandu (4 nights) → Chitwan National Park: Sauraha and Meghauli (2 nights) → Kathmandu (1 night)
The right first-trip split: use Kathmandu as a base for Boudha, Pashupatinath, Patan, Bhaktapur and Kirtipur, then make one worthwhile landscape change to Chitwan. Two nights in the park is the minimum that makes the long transfer defensible.
Plan this routeSlow Newar cities and Kavre hills
10 daysBoudha and Pashupatinath (3 days) → Patan (2 days) → Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan (2 days) → Dhulikhel, Panauti and Namo Buddha (2 days) → Kathmandu (1 day)
For travelers who care more about Newar urban texture, temples and food than safari checklists. Sleeping in Patan and Bhaktapur is deliberate: it buys you the quiet morning and evening hours that day-trippers miss. Dhulikhel is the better overnight than a rushed Nagarkot sunrise gamble.
Plan this routeKathmandu, Chitwan and a hill-country finish
12 days / 11 nightsKathmandu (5 nights) → Chitwan National Park: Sauraha and Meghauli (3 nights) → Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan (2 nights) → Dhulikhel, Panauti and Namo Buddha (1 night) → Kathmandu (1 night)
A more relaxed version of the classic first visit, with three nights in Chitwan for safari, canoeing and birding rather than one rushed package day. Finish east of the valley in Bhaktapur and Dhulikhel instead of going straight from humid lowlands to departure-day Kathmandu.
Plan this routeLangtang trek with proper buffers
16 daysKathmandu (2 days) → Langtang Valley and Kyanjin Gompa (10 days) → Patan (2 days) → Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan (2 days)
The mountain-first Bagmati trip. Give Langtang ten days to absorb the current access complications, altitude pacing and at least one weather or road buffer; do not dilute it with Chitwan. Patan and Bhaktapur make a civilized decompression finish after basic teahouses and mountain-road transfers.
