First visit? Stay in Westlands.
Westlands is the least compromising first-visit base: it combines the city’s broadest concentration of reliable hotels, restaurants, shopping and evening options with workable road access to the CBD and other visitor areas. Nairobi traffic means nowhere is universally close, but Westlands gives a short-stay visitor the most flexibility without making them sleep in the CBD’s most hectic streets.
Avoid sleeping near Tom Mboya Street, River Road and the budget-hotel blocks of the CBD, Archives, Ambassadeur, Globe Roundabout, Muthurwa Market and the Landies Road/Kirinyaga Road side of central Nairobi, Mombasa Road corridor for a general city break, Far-out gated suburbs chosen only because a listing looks luxurious. They can be cheap and central, but are hectic, have limited evening appeal, and place inexperienced visitors near the CBD zones where Wikivoyage advises heightened theft and scam awareness. Better to visit the centre in daylight and sleep in Westlands, Kilimani or a well-reviewed CBD hotel.
