Use Reykjavík for the country’s best food, bars, design, museums and public pools, plus a forgiving start or finish to a road trip. Two nights is usually enough unless you are relying on day tours.

The South Coast: Seljalandsfoss to Vík
The essential first-trip corridor: big waterfalls, black beaches, sea stacks and the dramatic run into Vík. It is popular because it delivers, but the weather is often foul and Reynisfjara demands real caution.

Golden Circle and the southwest interior edge
Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss make the cleanest high-impact day trip from Reykjavík. It is crowded and tour-bus heavy, so go early, late, or stay nearby rather than expecting solitude.

Snæfellsnes is the smart compact alternative to a full Ring Road: lava, beaches, fishing villages, Kirkjufell and a glacier-topped peninsula without the drive to the east. Add Borgarfjörður for waterfalls, hot springs and saga-country stops.

Akureyri, Mývatn and the Diamond Circle
North Iceland combines a useful small-city base with Mývatn’s volcanic terrain, Húsavík whale watching and serious waterfalls such as Dettifoss. It feels less frantic than the South Coast, though summer midges and winter passes are not minor details.

The Westfjords are where the standard circuit finally falls away: steep fjords, Dynjandi, Rauðasandur, bird cliffs and long, slow drives. They need dedicated summer time, not a spare day tacked onto the Ring Road.

The volcanic interior is Iceland at its rawest: rhyolite mountains, black deserts, glacial rivers and the Laugavegur trail. This is for a proper 4x4, highland bus or guide—not casual driving.

Useful for a first or last geothermal stop, with the Blue Lagoon, rough coast and lava landscapes close to the airport. Treat current volcanic access and lagoon operations as changeable rather than guaranteed.

Heimaey adds puffins, sea cliffs and the still-visible landscape of the 1973 Eldfell eruption. It is a strong extra night from the South Coast, but not worth forcing into a rushed itinerary.
