Worth it for a polished, visually striking geothermal-spa experience, especially as a first or last Iceland stop; it works best if you accept the high price and reserve a timed slot before arranging transport. This is a managed, busy resort spa—not a secluded natural hot spring.
Reserve a timed slot direct
Book Comfort direct from ISK 11,990 per adult at least two weeks ahead, as walk-up availability is generally not realistic and popular 11:00–15:00 arrivals sell out first.
MoreChoose an evening arrival
When seasonal hours allow, target 18:00–20:00 for lower crowds and better steam-and-lava atmosphere; arrive 20–30 minutes early for check-in, changing, and the mandatory shower.
MoreUse the correct entrance
Comfort, Premium, and Signature guests enter at Norðurljósavegur 9, while Retreat Spa guests must use the separate Retreat entrance at Norðurljósavegur 11.
MoreCheck volcanic and road status
Svartsengi is an active volcanic area where roads or operations can change quickly, so check official conditions immediately before departing—particularly in wind, snow, or eruption-related disruption.
MoreMain Blue Lagoon
~150 min · Timed Comfort, Premium, or Signature admission; remain until closing after entry.
The Retreat Spa
~300 min · Separate timed premium booking and separate entrance; Classic experience is five hours.
Blue Lagoon is a purpose-built geothermal seawater spa at Norðurljósavegur 9 in Grindavík, beside the Svartsengi geothermal power plant—not a natural hot spring. Mineral-rich geothermal water began pooling in the surrounding lava after the plant opened in the mid-1970s, when silica sealed the porous rock; locals bathed there before a formal facility opened in 1987. Today it is a managed, roughly 10,000-square-metre bathing lagoon with pale-blue, silica-rich water continuously renewed as part of the energy system, plus changing rooms, bars, restaurants and timed entry.
Its combination of milky-blue warm water, steam and black lava makes it Iceland’s most distinctive large-scale bathing experience, while its position about 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport and 45–50 minutes from Reykjavík makes it an easy first or last stop. It suits first-time visitors, couples and families who want a reliable all-weather spa experience. Skip it if you want an inexpensive, secluded or natural hot spring, dislike crowded commercial resorts or communal changing facilities, or are seeking a volcanic hike instead.
Before you go
Yes. Blue Lagoon says advance booking is essential and is generally fully booked year-round. Reserve a timed arrival at least two weeks ahead where possible; do not drive there expecting walk-up entry. Your booked arrival has a one-hour grace window, but entry after that is not guaranteed. For most visitors, buy Comfort: from ISK 11,990 per adult, including main-lagoon access, sauna, steam bath/cave, cold lagoon, silica mask, towel, toiletries, locker, and one non-alcoholic in-water-bar drink. Premium starts at ISK 14,990 and adds a bathrobe, drink of choice, two masks, and a small take-home mask; Signature starts at ISK 18,490 and adds further drinks and skincare. These are dynamic prices. Source: https://www.bluelagoon.com/day-visit/the-blue-lagoon
Choose late afternoon or evening—ideally 18:00–20:00 when available. The busiest arrivals are generally 11:00–15:00, especially about 13:00; evening slots are usually easier to obtain and quieter. In winter, an evening visit is atmospheric but gives little daylight view of the lava landscape.
Allow 2.5–3.5 hours for a normal visit: 20–30 minutes to check in, change and shower; 1.5–2.5 hours in the lagoon and facilities; then 20–30 minutes to shower and dress. Allow about four hours if eating at Lava Restaurant. Retreat Spa Classic is a five-hour experience.
Standard seasonal hours are 08:00–22:00 from June 1–14; 07:00–23:00 from June 15–August 20; 08:00–22:00 from August 21–January 31; and 08:00–20:00 from February 1–May 31. Guests leave the water 30 minutes before closing. December 24 and 31 have shorter hours. Confirm the date-specific hours while booking: https://www.bluelagoon.com/day-visit/the-blue-lagoon
Arrive 20–30 minutes before the reserved time for check-in, changing and the required shower. At reception, you receive a wristband for your locker and cashless purchases. Formally, you must arrive within the one-hour window around your booked time.
