Inner Pest (Belváros-Lipótváros)
The essential first-visit core: Parliament, St Stephen’s Basilica and the Danube promenade are all here. It is the easiest base for a short stay, though the Váci utca strip is best treated as a shortcut, not a dining destination.
Castle District and Castle Hill
Medieval lanes, Buda Castle, Matthias Church and the city’s mandatory panorama across the Danube. Go early or late; midday is when it feels most like a sightseeing set.
Jewish Quarter (Erzsébetváros)
Budapest’s densest mix of Jewish history, casual food, ruin bars and late-night energy, anchored by Dohány Street Synagogue. Stay on a side street if you want any chance of sleeping.
Terézváros and Andrássy Avenue
The grand Belle Époque route from central Pest toward Heroes’ Square, with the Opera as its strongest reason to stop. It is more convincing as an evening of architecture and culture than as a full-day neighborhood.
City Park (Városliget)
Pair Heroes’ Square and a museum with Széchenyi Thermal Bath; this is Budapest’s cleanest bath-and-culture day. Széchenyi is iconic but crowded, especially at peak hours.
Palace District and Museum Quarter
A handsome, café-heavy part of Józsefváros with the Hungarian National Museum, old palaces and more room to linger than District V. Choose it when you want central Budapest without the Jewish Quarter’s noise.
Gellért Hill, Tabán and South Buda
Come for the steep river views, the walk between Buda landmarks, and Rudas Bath’s atmospheric Ottoman character. It rewards people willing to climb rather than those trying to tick off sights quickly.
Újbuda and Bartók Béla Boulevard
South Buda’s best argument for spending an evening away from the tourist core: good cafés, galleries, wine bars and more lived-in dining. It is an add-on, not a substitute for the essentials on a short first visit.
Óbuda, Aquincum and Óbudai-sziget
Roman Aquincum, low-rise old-Buda fragments and quieter Danube paths reveal a city older than its imperial façade. It is dispersed, so save it for a longer stay or a specific archaeology interest.
Margaret Island
A simple green reset between Buda and Pest, with paths, gardens, ruins and room to run or stroll. Pleasant rather than essential, so do not give it prime time on a three-day trip.
Szentendre
The easiest escape from Budapest: a small, cobbled, Serbian-influenced artists’ town reached without much logistical pain. Its centre can be souvenir-heavy, but it works well as a low-stakes day out.
Danube Bend
The scenic upstream stretch around Visegrád and Esztergom offers castle-and-basilica drama beyond Szentendre. It is worth a full day only if you are happy to start early and accept transport planning.
Essential Budapest long weekend
3 nights / 3 full daysInner Pest (Belváros-Lipótváros) → Castle District and Castle Hill → Gellért Hill, Tabán and South Buda → City Park (Városliget) → Terézváros and Andrássy Avenue → Jewish Quarter (Erzsébetváros)
For a first-time long weekend that prioritizes the city’s big visual hits, one thermal bath and one proper evening out. It is full but realistic if you do not force a major museum into every day.

4 nights / 4 full daysInner Pest (Belváros-Lipótváros) → Castle District and Castle Hill → Gellért Hill, Tabán and South Buda → City Park (Városliget) → Terézváros and Andrássy Avenue → Jewish Quarter (Erzsébetváros) → Palace District and Museum Quarter
The best default for most travelers: the essentials, a bath, and one day to choose between museums, cafés, food or a slower river-and-park pace rather than racing to another landmark.

5-6 nightsInner Pest (Belváros-Lipótváros) → Castle District and Castle Hill → City Park (Városliget) → Jewish Quarter (Erzsébetváros) → Szentendre → Óbuda, Aquincum and Óbudai-sziget → Danube Bend
For travelers who want to stay in one hotel while adding one easy escape. Choose Szentendre for the low-effort day trip; make the broader Danube Bend optional rather than sacrificing Budapest’s core.

Built for repeat visitors, architecture and museum fans, or remote workers who want actual neighborhood time. It adds Óbuda and Újbuda without pretending they matter more than the classic centre.
