Getting around
There is no metro, rideshare network or meaningful town-center transit. The main island has one sealed coastal road, roughly 31 km around, and a single public bus that runs only partway around the island and returns about hourly—use it only if your schedule is flexible. For Faanui and the main island, a bicycle, scooter or rental car gives the most freedom; the full loop is an easy hour of driving before stops. Taxis exist but are limited and should be arranged, especially after dinner. Do not assume a road connection to an airport or motu resort: those trips require a boat transfer, usually arranged by the property.
When to go
May through October is the drier, slightly cooler period and the best weather bet; May is often singled out as especially good. It is also peak season, so flights and rooms cost more and fill earlier. November through April is hotter, more humid and much wetter, with frequent unpredictable storms; there are few indoor fallbacks, so build weather slack into the trip rather than booking every day around a boat excursion.
Book before you land
Air Tahiti flights to and from Bora Bora (BOB), especially in the May–October high season · Resort airport-boat transfers if they are not included with your stay · A preferred small-group lagoon snorkelling or shark-and-ray excursion; reserve before arrival in peak season · Bora Bora Lagoonarium, if it is a priority—this is a commercial, enclosed lagoon attraction rather than a free snorkel stop
- Use French Polynesian francs (XPF); Bora Bora is exceptionally expensive, and motu-resort restaurants and transfers can make an already pricey day much pricier.
- Confirm every boat transfer twice: whether it is included, its last return time, and whether it runs in bad weather. Missing it is more consequential here than missing a city bus.
- French and Tahitian are the main languages; English is widely understood in visitor-facing businesses. A simple “Ia ora na” is a good hello.
- The sun is fierce even while swimming or snorkelling. Reapply reef-conscious sunscreen, wear a rash guard if you have one, and do not touch coral, rays or sharks.
- Faanui is a real residential area, not an attraction set. Keep noise down near homes and do not enter private land to reach a viewpoint or WWII relic.
- Do not rely on the hourly bus for a fixed boat, dinner or flight connection; arrange a vehicle or transfer instead.
Worth leaving the city for
MaupitiFull day at minimum, and often better as an overnight. Air Tahiti’s Bora Bora–Maupiti flight is about 15 minutes, but airport/boat transfers and flight timing dominate the real commitment.
If you have several Bora Bora days, Maupiti is the one escape that can beat another resort-lagoon day: a smaller, less touristy volcanic island with a notably quieter feel. It is not for nightlife, and it requires accepting limited schedules and services.
RaiateaFull day at minimum; the Bora Bora–Raiatea flight is about 20 minutes, but transfers and limited inter-island schedules make this an early-start, schedule-dependent day.
Worth it for travelers who want a change from Bora Bora’s resort-lagoon rhythm and have enough time for another Society Island, not as a rushed add-on.
