Tórshavn
The capital is the practical dining and culture base, with Tinganes, the harbor and enough services to absorb a weather-disrupted day. It is small; use it as a base rather than a city-break destination.
North Streymoy
Saksun, Fossá, Tjørnuvík and the Vestmanna bird cliffs make this the highest-return scenic day from the capital. It gives you waterfalls, black sand and cliff drama without requiring a major hike.
Vágar
The airport island packs in Bøur, Gásadalur, Múlafossur, Trælanípan and access to Drangarnir. If time is tight, this is the island not to skip—but give it a full day rather than collecting roadside viewpoints.
Mykines
The western outlier is the serious puffin and seabird trip, with exposed Atlantic scenery that feels properly remote. Treat it as a weather-window excursion, not a fixed itinerary item; ferry capacity and conditions decide the day.
Eysturoy
Gjógv, Funningur, Gøta and Slættaratindur are the strongest mountain-and-village counterpoint to Vágar's waterfall circuit. The scenic roads north of the subsea tunnel deserve unhurried daylight.
Klaksvík and the Northern Islands
This is the sharper, more vertical north: Klaksvík as the working hub, Kalsoy for Kallur Lighthouse, and Viðoy and Kunoy for excellent driving without the ferry logistics. It rewards a week-plus itinerary, not a rushed detour.
Sandoy
Sandoy trades headline cliffs for farmland, dunes, birdlife and a notably calmer driving day. It is the sensible contrast island when you have time, not the place to spend your only clear-weather day.
Suðuroy
The southern island feels separate from the central Faroes, with Beinisvørð, Fámjin, Vágur and Hvannhagi earning the ferry commitment. Give it two nights; a same-day return is technically possible and practically a bad idea.

For a first visit with limited time: base in Tórshavn or nearby, use Vágar twice, and cover the core scenery without making Mykines or Kalsoy ruinously high-stakes bookings.

For travelers who want the famous bird island and Kalsoy as well as the essentials. Keep Mykines and Kalsoy separated by buffer days, and schedule both early enough to retry after wind or ferry disruption.

For hikers and repeat-minded travelers who want time for boat trips, village roads and weather failures without treating every day as a transit exercise. The final Tórshavn stop is deliberate flight-weather insurance.
