U.S., Canadian, UK, Australian, New Zealand and most EU passport holders generally do not need a visitor visa for tourism; travelers from visa-required countries must obtain one in advance. All visitors should carry a valid passport, proof of onward/return travel and evidence of accommodation or sufficient funds. Verify current requirements with Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control before booking.
Getting in
- Owen Roberts International Airport, Grand Cayman: This is the main international gateway and the arrival point for nearly every first-time visitor, with direct links to major North American hubs and regional Caribbean connections. It is close to George Town and Seven Mile Beach, though rush-hour transfers can still drag.
- Charles Kirkconnell International Airport, Cayman Brac: Use this only if Cayman Brac is a deliberate part of the trip. Most visitors connect through Grand Cayman on Cayman Airways Express rather than arrive here first.
- Edward Bodden Airfield, Little Cayman: Little Cayman is reached by small domestic aircraft from Grand Cayman, often via Cayman Brac. Flight capacity is limited, so leave buffer time and do not connect it tightly to an international departure.
Getting around
Rent a car if you plan to see Rum Point, North Side, East End or heritage sites; drive on the left, and book early in winter and holiday periods. Taxis work for airport, Seven Mile Beach and George Town trips but become expensive for touring, while buses are useful mainly along the busy west corridor and not a dependable island-exploration solution. Boats are the practical way to reach Stingray City, and domestic flights—not ferries—connect the Sister Islands.
Money
The Cayman Islands dollar (KYD) is the local currency, though U.S. dollars are widely accepted; the KYD is fixed at CI$1 = US$1.20. Cards work almost everywhere, but carry some cash for small purchases and taxis. Check restaurant bills for a service charge—often around 15–18 percent—before adding a tip.

- George Town is a cruise port: check ship-call days and avoid the waterfront, museum and duty-free shops at midday when ships are in.
- Grand Cayman is costly. Grocery runs, rental cars, popular restaurants and water excursions all need more advance planning than on a casual Caribbean break.
- Drive on the left, but many rental cars are left-hand drive; take the first hour slowly, especially around roundabouts and in George Town traffic.
- Reef-safe behavior matters: do not stand on coral, feed wildlife or pick up sea stars at Starfish Point. Look at stingrays and sea stars without handling them.
- Keep boat days flexible during the wet and hurricane season; thunderstorms and wind can cancel charters even when the hotel beach looks fine.
- George Town becomes quiet after cruise passengers leave. Stay on Seven Mile Beach or Camana Bay if walkable evening dining and beach time are your priority.
