Borovets
Base · 3 nights
The obvious base for Rila access: dependable ski infrastructure in winter, and gondola-assisted walks, Black Rock and Tsarska Bistritsa in summer. Stay for convenience rather than village atmosphere; it is a purpose-built resort with uneven food and little local texture.
Samokov
Base · 2–4 nights
The sensible, cheaper working base below Borovets, with better access to Malyovitsa, Beli Iskar, Belchin and local buses. It is functional rather than beautiful, but that practicality matters in a region with slow roads.
Malyovitsa and Govedartsi
The quieter, more serious side of Rila: trailheads, rock faces and proper mountain terrain west of Samokov. Choose it over Borovets if hiking or climbing matters more than lifts, bars and resort services.
Beli Iskar and Iskar Reservoir
A low-key water-and-forest break between hard mountain days, with village roads, easy walks and reservoir scenery. It works best with a car and modest expectations; this is not a polished lakeside resort.
Belchin and Tsari Mali Grad
A worthwhile half-day detour for the compact reconstructed hilltop fortress and the surrounding Rila–Plana scenery. Pair it with a Samokov stay or a drive toward Sofia rather than making it a destination overnight.
Koprivshtitsa
Base · 1–2 nights
The province's essential heritage stop: an unusually intact National Revival town of painted merchant houses, bridges and house museums. Give it a night or two so you can walk before day-trippers arrive, rather than treating it as a rushed museum circuit.
Etropole
Base · 1–2 nights
A modest Balkan Mountain town with a stronger historical payoff than it first suggests, chiefly the forest-set Holy Trinity (Varovitec) Monastery and waterfall. It is a good one-night stop for drivers, not a dense city-break destination.
Pravets and Botevgrad
Short stop · 1 night
The north-province option for a comfortable lake, golf or spa pause after Etropole, with Botevgrad supplying services. Go for golf or an easy resort overnight; culture-first visitors should prioritize Rila and Koprivshtitsa instead.
Dragoman Marsh and Chepan Mountain
Short stop · 1 night
A western wetland-and-karst landscape that feels entirely unlike Rila, with strong birding and photographic potential. It is a deliberate specialist detour, not an essential stop for a short first visit.

4 nightsBorovets (3 nights) → Koprivshtitsa (1 night)
The cleanest short first visit: use Borovets for skiing or lift-assisted hiking and Black Rock, then give Koprivshtitsa an overnight so it is not reduced to a rushed afternoon. Best with a rental car or private transfer; the connection between the two is awkward by public transport.

7 nightsSamokov (4 nights) → Koprivshtitsa (2 nights) → Etropole (1 night)
The best first serious trip with a car. Samokov is the practical base for Borovets, Malyovitsa and Govedartsi, Beli Iskar and Iskar Reservoir, plus Belchin and Tsari Mali Grad. Koprivshtitsa gets the unhurried day it deserves; Etropole adds the monastery and forest without pretending it needs a longer city break.

11 nightsBorovets (3 nights) → Samokov (2 nights) → Koprivshtitsa (2 nights) → Etropole (2 nights) → Pravets and Botevgrad (1 night) → Dragoman Marsh and Chepan Mountain (1 night)
For repeat visitors with a car who want more than the obvious Rila-and-Koprivshtitsa circuit. Split Borovets from Samokov to keep resort hiking separate from quieter valley days, then move north through Etropole and Pravets. Finish at Dragoman only if birding, wetlands or karst scenery genuinely matter; otherwise drop it and keep the trip to 10 nights.
