Visas & entry
U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa for stays of up to 90 days but need a valid passport; UK British citizens can generally visit visa-free for up to 180 days in a 12-month period, subject to passport, onward-ticket and other entry requirements. Some nationalities on Bermuda’s visa-controlled list need a valid multiple-entry U.S., UK or Canadian visa/travel authorization, valid beyond the trip; rules change, so verify with the Bermuda Government before booking. Non-resident air and yacht visitors should complete the free Bermuda Arrival Card and carry lodging and onward-travel proof.
Getting in
- L.F. Wade International Airport, East End near St. George’s: Bermuda’s only commercial airport and the normal arrival point for nearly all independent visitors. It is well placed for St. George’s and the East End but not for Hamilton or the Dockyard, so plan an onward taxi, bus or transfer.
- Royal Naval Dockyard, Ireland Island: The main cruise-ship gateway and a practical ferry terminus at the far West End. It is useful for cruise calls, but not an airport substitute and can feel busy and retail-heavy when ships are in port.
Getting around
Buses and ferries are the sensible backbone for visitors without a vehicle: Hamilton is the main bus hub, and the fast ferry to Dockyard is much quicker than the equivalent road trip. Taxis are useful but costly; roads are narrow and traffic means cross-island journeys take longer than they look. Base centrally or on the South Shore rather than trying to commute daily from one end of Bermuda to the other.
Money
Bermuda uses the Bermudian dollar, pegged 1:1 with the U.S. dollar; U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Cards work well at hotels, restaurants and larger businesses, but carry some cash for small purchases and transport contingencies; expect high prices and check whether service has already been added before tipping.
- Complete the Bermuda Arrival Card before arrival if entering by air or yacht, and keep proof of accommodation and onward travel handy.
- Do not bring cannabis or CBD products, pepper spray, stun guns, firearms or even spent shell casings; Bermuda treats these seriously.
- Do not assume every picturesque South Shore cove is safe for swimming. Check surf, currents and hazard flags, and use lifeguarded beaches where available.
- Cup Match and major summer sailing events can sharply tighten rooms, alter business hours and crowd beaches; book early or avoid the dates for a quiet resort trip.
- Winter is not simply low season: some beach operations, boat excursions, hotels and restaurants reduce hours or close, so verify operating calendars before committing to a specific experience.
