U.S., Canadian, UK, Australian, New Zealand, Irish, EU and most Caribbean passport holders generally do not need a visa for ordinary short visits, though the admission stamp—not a generic assumption—sets the permitted stay. Some travelers holding a valid multiple-entry U.S., Canadian or Schengen visa or permanent-residence card may qualify for a visa exemption of up to 30 days. Getting in
- Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, near Belize City/Ladyville: This is the main commercial international gateway and where nearly all fly-in visitors arrive. From here, continue by road to the mainland, take a domestic flight to the cayes or coast, or transfer into Belize City for water taxis.
- Chetumal, Mexico / northern land border: The practical overland entry for travelers continuing from Mexico into Corozal or Orange Walk. It suits a wider Mexico–Central America route more than a short fly-in beach holiday.
- Guatemala / western land border: The overland option for travelers linking Guatemala with Cayo and western Belize. It is useful on a regional itinerary, not usually the simplest start for a Belize-only trip.
Getting around
Rent a car for Cayo, the Hummingbird Highway, Hopkins, Placencia and Toledo; it is wasted effort on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. Domestic flights cost far more than buses but can save a vacation day, especially for mainland-to-island combinations; BZE–San Pedro is about 15 minutes in the air. Water taxis are cheaper for the cayes but require a separate transfer to Belize City and are a poor gamble after a late international arrival. Buses are cheap and usable on mainland corridors, but slow, variable and not designed around tight sightseeing schedules.
Money
The Belize dollar (BZD/BZ$) is pegged at BZ$2 to US$1, and U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourism. Always clarify whether a quoted dollar price is Belize or U.S. currency, and carry small clean notes for taxis, tips, village shops and boat expenses; marked or worn U.S. bills may be refused.
- Do not book the last Belize City–caye ferry after a late international arrival, or plan a tight same-day ferry return before an international flight.
- Avoid driving after dark outside towns; road quality and travel times are worse than the map suggests.
- Use domestic flights when a long land-and-water transfer would consume most of a day; they are expensive, but often the sensible splurge.
- On Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, skip the rental car: golf carts, walking, bikes and boats are the practical options.
- Confirm whether every quoted "$" price is BZ$ or US$ before paying.
- Carry cash for small businesses, taxis, market food, tips and incidental boat costs even if hotels and larger restaurants take cards.
