Getting around
There is no public transit, no metro and no need for a car: conventional car rental is not available. Dunmore Town is genuinely walkable, especially around the harbour-side streets; use your feet for town and rent a golf cart for beach runs, dinner outside your immediate area, or moving beach gear. Taxis exist—Junkanoo Cabs is listed locally, with US$5 per person cited—but do not expect app-based rideshare coverage or instant pickups. The Bahamas drives on the left, so do not treat a golf cart as a toy: drive slowly on narrow lanes, confirm return hours and charge/fuel arrangements, and avoid driving after drinks.
When to go
November through April is the dry, reliably pleasant season—and mid-December through mid-April is also the expensive, booked-up peak, especially around Christmas/New Year, school holidays and Easter. Late April to early June can be a better value compromise before summer humidity and wetter weather build. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the greatest practical storm risk generally later in that period; summer and autumn are not automatically washouts, but flight, ferry and boat plans need slack. Dunmore Town has no major attraction-closure calendar; weather and sea state are the real disruptors.
Book before you land
North Eleuthera and nearby Eleuthera stopsFull day door-to-door; include the ferry crossings, waiting time and prearranged ground transport.
This is the most logical break from Harbour Island if you want a change of landscape rather than another beach day: take the water taxi back across and arrange a driver or tour on Eleuthera for its roads, beaches and inland natural sites. It is worthwhile only if you commit to a proper island day; doing it independently without transport is inefficient.
Spanish Wells by boatFull day once transfers, boat time and weather contingency are included.
Worth considering for travelers who want to see a different, working-island side of the northern Bahamas rather than repeat Dunmore Town’s polished beach-resort rhythm. It makes sense as a booked boat outing, not as a casual hop—conditions and operator schedules decide whether it is practical.
Reef, sandbar or snorkeling charter from Harbour IslandHalf day to full day, depending on the charter; reserve ahead in peak season and expect weather-related changes.
The best ‘day trip’ is often offshore rather than on land. It earns the day only if conditions are good and the operator has a specific reef, sandbar or wildlife route; otherwise Pink Sand Beach is a better use of your time and money.
