Brisbane
Base · 2–3 days
Queensland’s most useful arrival base: river ferries, strong dining, galleries and walkable neighbourhoods rather than resort scenery. Give it 2–3 nights, but do not use it as a base for the entire southeast.
Gold Coast and hinterland
Choose the southern beaches—Burleigh, Currumbin, Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay—over generic Surfers Paradise if atmosphere matters. Add Lamington or Springbrook for rainforest walks and waterfalls.
Sunshine Coast and Noosa
Base · 3–4 days
Noosa combines a swimmable bay, coastal walks in Noosa National Park and serious eating; Mooloolaba and Caloundra are better-value family alternatives. Stay 3–5 nights rather than treating it as a rushed Brisbane day trip.
K’gari and the Fraser Coast
Base · 3 days
Base in Hervey Bay for a guided 2–3-day K’gari trip: freshwater lakes, rainforest growing from sand and long beach highways are the point. It is also Queensland’s standout whale-watching area.
Bundaberg, 1770 and the Southern Great Barrier Reef
A quieter reef alternative built around Bundaberg, Agnes Water/1770 and island or cay stays such as Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave. Come for turtles, manta rays and reef time, not urban nightlife or easy transport.
Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays
Base · 3–4 days
Airlie Beach is a practical, sociable launch point for Whitehaven Beach, diving and multi-night sailing; the boat trip matters more than the town itself. Use Hamilton Island instead if you want the simplest fly-in resort stay.
Townsville and Magnetic Island
Base · 3 days
Townsville is mainly the ferry gateway to Magnetic Island, where boulder-fringed bays, walking tracks and koalas make a low-key tropical stop. Stay on Magnetic for 2–3 nights if you want to slow down.
Cairns
Base · 3–4 days
The state’s best reef logistics base, with the broadest choice of outer-reef boats, liveaboards, dive courses and rainforest day trips. It is a gateway city rather than a beach resort, which is exactly why it works.
Port Douglas, Mossman and the Daintree
Base · 4 days
This is the more polished north-Queensland combination of Four Mile Beach, reef boats, Mossman Gorge and the drive north to Cape Tribulation. Stay overnight beyond the Daintree River; trying to squeeze it into a quick Cairns day trip misses the point.
Atherton Tablelands
Base · 3 days
A cooler volcanic upland behind Cairns, best explored by car for crater lakes, waterfalls, coffee, tropical fruit, dairy and small towns such as Yungaburra. Give it an overnight rather than a token half-day tour.
Outback Queensland: Longreach and the Channel Country
A separate journey of stockman history, fossil country, vast roads and dark skies, with Longreach as the accessible entry point. Birdsville, Boulia and the far west need a properly prepared vehicle and time; do not bolt them onto a reef holiday.
South East Queensland without overreaching
7 daysBrisbane (3 days) → Sunshine Coast and Noosa (4 days)
The right first southeast trip if you want a city start and an actual coastal stay, not a string of rushed day trips. Use Brisbane for ferries, food and galleries; give Noosa or the Sunshine Coast enough time for beaches, the national park and a hinterland day.
Plan this routeClassic reef and rainforest first visit
10 daysBrisbane (2 days) → Cairns (4 days) → Port Douglas, Mossman and the Daintree (4 days)
Fly Brisbane to Cairns rather than wasting days on the highway. Cairns handles the outer reef, Kuranda and the Tablelands; Port Douglas is where to slow down for beach time, Mossman Gorge and an overnight beyond the Daintree River.

14 daysBrisbane (2 days) → Sunshine Coast and Noosa (3 days) → K’gari and the Fraser Coast (3 days) → Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays (3 days) → Cairns (3 days)
For travelers who want Queensland’s big-ticket coast without pretending the Bruce Highway is a holiday. Drive the short southeast section, take a guided K’gari trip, then use domestic flights for the long jumps to the Whitsundays and Cairns.
Plan this routeDeeper tropical north: islands, reef, rainforest and uplands
18 daysAirlie Beach and the Whitsundays (4 days) → Townsville and Magnetic Island (3 days) → Cairns (4 days) → Port Douglas, Mossman and the Daintree (4 days) → Atherton Tablelands (3 days)
A north-focused trip for repeat visitors or anyone who values slower island and rainforest time over Brisbane and the southeast. Sail from Airlie, stay on Magnetic rather than merely ferrying across, use Cairns for reef logistics, then rent a car for the Daintree and an unhurried Tablelands finish.
