For a first Puglia trip centered on wandering as well as sleeping well, Lecce gives the best balance: an exceptionally walkable historic centre, strong food and evening life, a major rail terminus, and workable access to Salento. It is less universally connected than Bari, but much more rewarding as a multi-night place to come home to.

Avoid sleeping near Bari Centrale station blocks, Lecce station and Via Taranto corridor, Baia Verde, Gallipoli, Isolated countryside trulli without a car. They are practical for an early train but are less atmospheric than Murat or Bari Vecchia, and busy station zones warrant normal city pickpocket awareness.
