First visit? Stay in International Drive (Convention Center to ICON Park).
For a first visit that mixes more than one resort, International Drive is the least-committal base: it has the broadest hotel range and sits more sensibly between Universal and SeaWorld than Disney property does. It is not charming and still benefits from a car or rideshare, but it minimizes the mistake of booking deep in a Disney-only or Kissimmee-only bubble.

Avoid sleeping near Orange Blossom Trail north of Sand Lake Road, Parramore, west of Downtown Orlando, The far ends of US-192 in Kissimmee, Isolated International Drive hotel blocks. This is not a visitor lodging district. Wikivoyage specifically flags drug- and prostitution-related crime here; cheap roadside rooms are not worth the security and convenience trade-off.
