Pikes Peak - America's Mountain

Pikes Peak—America’s Mountain is a 14,115-foot Front Range summit west of Colorado Springs, reached by the 19-mile paved Pikes Peak Highway from Cascade. The 38-mile round-trip road climbs through forest, reservoirs and alpine tundra to a modern summit visitor center; it is an engineered scenic experience with deep Colorado history, including the 1915 highway, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and Katharine Lee Bates’s inspiration for “America the Beautiful.”

It is one of the rare ways to experience a true 14er summit, enormous high-country views and alpine tundra without a technical climb or all-day hike. Go for the changing landscapes, summit overlook and visitor center—not solitude; skip it if steep mountain driving, altitude, crowds or weather uncertainty will diminish the experience.

Booking the visit

For travel between May 1 and September 30, reserve the $2 timed-entry permit per vehicle as soon as your Colorado Springs date is firm, especially for weekends, holidays and clear-weather days; seasonal permits are generally released by April 15. You also need separate one-day admission ($18 adult, $8 child age 6–15, or $65 carload up to five); buying admission online does not replace the timed permit. Choose the first available morning arrival window, usually 7:30–9:30 a.m., arrive at the Pikes Peak Highway Gateway, 5089 Pikes Peak Highway in Cascade, and have screenshots or printouts of both confirmations ready because reception is poor. Follow signed Pikes Peak Highway directions from US-24 rather than relying solely on navigation.

Reserve the first morning entry slot and drive directly to the summit before stopping at viewpoints; crowds build from late morning and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Avoid Pikes Peak Marathon/Ascent weekend, September 19–20, 2026, because of event pressure and possible operational changes.

• Dress for the summit rather than Colorado Springs: it is commonly 30–40°F colder. Bring insulating and windproof/waterproof layers, closed shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and snacks.
• At 14,115 feet, take headache, nausea, dizziness, weakness or worsening breathlessness seriously: descend rather than pushing through. Do not make this your first strenuous activity after flying in, and do not bring infants under six months to the summit.
• Drivers should arrive with at least half a tank, use low gear or suitable hybrid braking mode downhill, and brake firmly/intermittently rather than riding the brakes. Rangers may conduct brake checks at Glen Cove; trailers and campers are prohibited.
• For photos, prioritize the summit’s accessible outdoor overlook, then stop at Devils Playground for tundra drama and Crystal Reservoir for a broader foreground on the descent.
• If mountain driving feels stressful, use the seasonal Pikes Peak Shuttle or take the Cog Railway from Manitou Springs instead.
