First visit? Stay in Flatiron, NoMad & Union Square.
It is the best all-round first base: central enough to walk to the Empire State Building, Chelsea, Greenwich Village and SoHo, with unusually broad subway access for everything else, yet markedly less chaotic than Times Square. The trade-off is price, not convenience.
Avoid sleeping near Times Square’s immediate hotel core, Penn Station/Herald Square’s busiest blocks, Far-west Hudson Yards hotel blocks, Far-east Alphabet City, Hotels marketed as Williamsburg but far from the L, J/M/Z or G. It is convenient for Broadway but relentlessly crowded, noisy and chain-heavy; staying a few blocks away in Midtown or Flatiron keeps the convenience without making every return to the hotel a gauntlet.
