Garden of the Gods

Garden of the Gods is a city-owned 1,341-acre public park on the western edge of Colorado Springs, known for dramatically tilted red, pink, and white sandstone fins set against Pikes Peak. Formed from roughly 300-million-year-old sediments later uplifted and eroded into spires, gateways, and balanced rocks, it was deeded to the city in 1909 to remain free to the public and was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971.

It offers an unusually high scenery-to-effort ratio: iconic Front Range geology, Pikes Peak views, paved walking paths, free admission, and free parking make it excellent for first-time Colorado visitors, families, photographers, and travelers with only a morning in Colorado Springs. Walk the 1.5-mile paved Perkins Central Garden Trail and add Siamese Twins for the Pikes Peak rock-window view. Skip the central area if you want wilderness solitude, strenuous hiking, or freedom from tour traffic and crowds.

Booking the visit

Book nothing for an independent park visit; there is no admission ticket, timed entry, or reservation system. Navigate to the Visitor & Nature Center at 1805 N. 30th Street, take the west exit at the 30th Street roundabout into the park, and arrive before 8 a.m. for the best chance of central parking. If the Visitor Center or main Central Garden lot is full, go directly to the Gateway Road overflow lot and use the pedestrian tunnel or seasonal shuttle rather than circling. Reserve separately only if a guided walk, Jeep, Segway, e-bike, horseback, or climbing experience is essential to your trip.

Arrive before 8 a.m., ideally at sunrise—the park opens at 5 a.m.—and go straight to Perkins Central Garden Trail before the Visitor Center opens at 9 a.m. On summer weekends, avoid roughly 10 a.m.–3 p.m.; if central parking is full, use Gateway Road overflow immediately rather than repeatedly driving the one-way loop.

• Use the north/main parking area for direct access to the paved Perkins Central Garden Trail; it has restrooms and is the most useful first-stop trailhead.
• Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a wind layer: the park is around 6,400 feet, has limited shade, and weather changes quickly. Sneakers are adequate for Perkins; use trail shoes for Siamese Twins and other unpaved routes.
• For photos, use the Visitor Center terrace for the broad Pikes Peak-and-red-rock view, Siamese Twins for the Pikes Peak window, Balanced Rock for forced perspective, and High Point Overlook near sunset.
• Do not fly drones, drink alcohol, remove rocks or plants, or scramble more than 10 feet above a formation’s base. Dogs must be leashed on a leash at least six feet long, and waste must be removed.
• Follow the one-way road system, observe the 20 mph limit, and avoid trying to make repeated U-turns at scenic pull-offs.
