First visit? Stay in Le Marais.
Le Marais is the best all-round first base because it is central enough to walk to the Seine, Notre-Dame, Pompidou and much of the historic core, has unusually broad Métro coverage, and remains appealing after the museums close. The trade-off is crowds, high rates and small rooms.
Avoid sleeping near The immediate Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est blocks, The busiest Sacré-Cœur/Pigalle approach streets, The Champs-Élysées frontage, La Défense for a leisure-only Paris trip, Far-out addresses beyond the Boulevard Périphérique chosen solely for a low rate. Useful for an early train, but many visitors find the station approaches hectic, unattractive and less comfortable late at night. Pickpocket vigilance is especially important around major stations and on transit.
