Lençóis Maranhenses: Brazil's Desert of Lagoons

Endless white dunes, turquoise rain lagoons, and a landscape that looks like a fever dream — the Brazilian national park that defies every expectation of what a desert can be

Duration
5 Days / 4 Nights
Destinations
São Luís · Barreirinhas · Lençóis Maranhenses
Best season
July – September (lagoons at peak)

Lençóis Maranhenses is one of the strangest and most beautiful landscapes on earth — 1,500 square kilometers of white sand dunes in northeastern Brazil that fill with thousands of turquoise and emerald lagoons during the rainy season (January–June), reaching peak beauty from July to September. The park has no roads, no structures, and no permanent inhabitants. You enter by 4x4, boat, or on foot, and what you find is a landscape that looks like it was designed by a surrealist painter on a very good day.

Day by Day
  1. Day 1

    Arrival in São Luís

Fly into São Luís, the capital of Maranhão state and a UNESCO World Heritage City — Portuguese colonial architecture with azulejo-tiled facades, Afro-Brazilian culture, and a reggae music scene (São Luís is the reggae capital of Brazil, improbably). Private transfer to a São Luís boutique hotel in the historic center. Evening: welcome dinner at a Centro Histórico restaurant — cuxá (a rice dish with a local herb unique to Maranhão), grilled fish, and a cold Guaraná Antarctica.

    • Stay: São Luís boutique hotel, Centro Histórico
    • Culinary: Cuxá and grilled fish dinner
  2. Day 2

São Luís to Barreirinhas: Gateway to the Dunes

Morning walk through São Luís's UNESCO center — the tiled colonial houses, the Palácio dos Leões (governor's palace), and the Mercado Central. Drive or fly east to Barreirinhas (4 hours by road, or 1 hour by charter flight), the gateway town for the national park on the Preguiças River. Check into a Barreirinhas pousada (guesthouse). Afternoon: boat ride on the Rio Preguiças through mangroves and riverside communities to Pequenos Lençóis (a smaller, accessible dune field) for a first taste of the landscape. Evening: dinner at a riverside restaurant — fish stew, farofa (toasted cassava flour), and fresh açaí.

    • Scenic: Rio Preguiças boat ride
    • Culinary: Fish stew and açaí dinner
  3. Day 3

Lençóis Maranhenses: The Blue & Green Lagoons

4x4 into the national park — the road ends and the sand begins. Your guide navigates the dune routes to the Lagoa Azul (Blue Lagoon) and Lagoa Bonita (Beautiful Lagoon) — crystal-clear freshwater lagoons nestled between white dunes, warm enough to swim in, and shifting in color from turquoise to emerald depending on the depth and the angle of the sun. Swim, float, and walk the dune ridges between lagoons — the only sounds are wind and water. Lunch: picnic on the dunes (your guide prepares a simple spread of fruit, sandwiches, and cold drinks). Afternoon: continue deeper into the park for quieter lagoons away from the main tourist routes. Return to Barreirinhas by sunset.

    • Scenic: Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita (swimming, dune walking)
    • Culinary: Dune picnic lunch
  4. Day 4

    Atins & Farewell

Morning boat or 4x4 to Atins, a tiny fishing village on the edge of the national park — sandy streets, kite-surfing on the beach, and the feeling of being at the end of the world. Walk from Atins into the park for a different angle on the dunes — this route reaches emptier lagoons and higher dune crests. Lunch in Atins: grilled fish on the beach, served by a family-run restaurant in the sand. Afternoon: return to Barreirinhas. Farewell dinner: grilled peixe (fish), caranguejo (crab picked by hand, a Maranhão ritual), and a caipirinha made with local cachaça.

    • Scenic: Atins village, empty dune lagoons
    • Culinary: Beach fish lunch, farewell crab dinner
  5. Day 5

Transfer to Barreirinhas airstrip or drive to São Luís Airport for your onward flight. Your Byline concierge confirms routing.
