Costa Rica: Cloud Forest to Pacific Coast

Howler monkeys at dawn, volcanic hot springs at dusk, and a green canopy that reminds you what biodiversity actually looks like — pura vida in seven days

Duration
7 Days / 6 Nights
Destinations
San José · Arenal · Monteverde · Guanacaste Coast
Best season
December – April (dry season)

Costa Rica packs more biodiversity per square meter than almost anywhere on earth — scarlet macaws, three-toed sloths, poison dart frogs, and humpback whales all within a country the size of West Virginia. This journey moves from the volcanic drama of Arenal through the cloud-forest canopy of Monteverde to the Pacific coast's dry-forest beaches, with adventure activities calibrated to your comfort level and wildlife encounters that feel genuinely wild.

Day by Day
  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Arenal

Fly into Juan Santamaría Airport (San José). Private transfer to Arenal (3 hours through the Central Valley, or 25-minute domestic flight to La Fortuna). Check into Nayara Tented Camp, a luxury glamping experience on a hillside facing Arenal Volcano — open-air tented suites with private plunge pools, outdoor rain showers, and a volcano view from your bed. Afternoon: soak in the resort's thermal hot springs, fed by volcanic geothermal activity. Evening: dinner at Amor Loco, the camp's Latin American restaurant — Costa Rican ceviche, wood-grilled sea bass, and a cocktail made with guaro (Costa Rica's sugar-cane spirit) and passionfruit.

    • Stay: Nayara Tented Camp — Tented suite with private pool and volcano view
    • Wellness: Volcanic hot springs
    • Culinary: Dinner at Amor Loco
  2. Day 2

    Arenal: Volcano, Waterfall & Wildlife

Morning guided hike on the Arenal 1968 Trail — walk across lava fields from the volcano's last major eruption through regenerating forest, with your naturalist guide pointing out toucans, coatis, and howler monkeys. Continue to La Fortuna Waterfall, a 70-meter cascade into a jungle pool (500 steps down, worth every one). Afternoon: choose between hanging bridges canopy walk (a gentler perspective on the forest), white-water rafting on the Pacuare River (Class III-IV, one of the world's top river runs), or a chocolate-and-coffee farm tour. Evening at leisure at the camp.

    • Scenic: Arenal 1968 Trail volcano hike and La Fortuna Waterfall
    • Optional: Hanging bridges, Pacuare rafting, or coffee-chocolate farm
  3. Day 3

    Arenal to Monteverde: Cloud Forest

Private transfer to Monteverde (3 hours over the mountain roads, or a scenic boat-and-van combination across Lake Arenal). Check into Senda Monteverde by Cayuga Collection, a 24-room boutique hotel with direct access to the Aguti Private Nature Reserve. Afternoon: a guided walk in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve — your naturalist guide tracks the resplendent quetzal (one of the world's most beautiful birds, with iridescent green plumage and a tail that trails like a ribbon), along with hummingbirds, glass frogs, and orchids. The forest is perpetually misty, draped in epiphytes, and home to 2.5% of the world's biodiversity in an area you can walk across in a morning. Evening: an elevated canopy dinner — a seven-course meal served on a platform in the treetops of Monteverde, surrounded by forest sounds and candlelight.

    • Stay: Senda Monteverde — Forest-view room
    • Cultural: Guided cloud-forest walk (quetzal tracking)
    • Culinary: Treetop canopy dinner
  4. Day 4

    Monteverde: Canopy Adventures

Morning: zipline or hanging-bridge tour through the cloud-forest canopy — Monteverde pioneered canopy tourism, and the experience of flying between treetops at 60 mph above a forest floor 100 meters below is still thrilling. Alternatively, a more contemplative morning: a bird-watching walk at dawn (350+ species recorded in the region), followed by a visit to the Monteverde Butterfly Garden and the Herpetarium (frogs and reptiles). Afternoon: visit a local coffee cooperative — Monteverde produces some of Costa Rica's best coffee, and the bean-to-cup tour includes roasting, cupping, and more caffeine than is strictly advisable. Evening at leisure.

    • Scenic: Cloud-forest zipline or canopy walk
    • Cultural: Coffee cooperative tour
  5. Day 5

    Monteverde to Guanacaste Coast

Private transfer southwest to the Pacific coast (3 hours) — the landscape shifts from misty cloud forest to dry tropical forest as you descend to sea level. Check into Hotel Punta Islita, a Luxury Collection resort on a hilltop above a secluded beach, with an infinity pool that merges visually with the Pacific horizon. Afternoon: explore the beach, snorkel the nearby reef, or take a guided kayak tour through the mangrove estuaries. Evening: dinner at 1492 restaurant — grilled Pacific snapper, patacones (fried plantain), and a coconut flan, eaten on the terrace as the sun drops into the ocean.

    • Stay: Hotel Punta Islita — Ocean-view suite
    • Culinary: Pacific seafood dinner at 1492
  6. Day 6

    Guanacaste: At Leisure

A free day on the Pacific. Your Byline companion can arrange: a morning visit to the Macaw Recovery Network (see wild scarlet macaws and learn about the reintroduction program); a horseback ride along the beach and through the dry forest; a boat trip for seasonal whale-watching (humpbacks pass from July to November); a surf lesson at a nearby break; or a full spa day at the resort using indigenous ingredients. Farewell dinner at a beachside restaurant — whole grilled lobster, tropical fruit ceviche, and a sunset so vivid it looks filtered.

    • Optional: Macaw Recovery Network, horseback beach ride, whale-watching, surfing
  7. Day 7

    Departure

Private transfer to Liberia Airport (Daniel Oduber Quirós, approximately 90 minutes) for your outbound flight. Your Byline concierge confirms logistics.
