Bali: Temples, Rice Fields & Indian Ocean

Volcanic peaks, jungle rivers, and Hindu ceremony woven into daily life — a privately guided journey from Ubud's green interior to Uluwatu's clifftop edge

Duration
9 Days / 8 Nights
Destinations
Ubud · Sidemen · Uluwatu · Jimbaran
Best season
April – October

Bali is an island that asks you to slow down. The best version of a trip here moves between its two poles — the interior's terraced rice fields, artist villages, and river-gorge silence, and the southern coast's limestone cliffs, surf breaks, and temple sunsets — with enough space between them for the ceremonies, conversations, and long lunches that no itinerary can schedule but every good one makes room for.

Day by Day
  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Ubud

Private transfer from Ngurah Rai Airport through the ascending rice terraces to Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, where John Pawson's elliptical reception pavilion floats above a lotus pond and the Ayung River gorge drops away below. Your villa is carved into the hillside with a private plunge pool, outdoor rain shower, and a meditation terrace hidden behind tall grasses. Settle in with a Balinese welcome drink of fresh turmeric jamu, then let the river sounds and frog chorus close out the day.

    • Stay: Four Seasons Sayan — One-Bedroom Pool Villa overlooking Ayung River gorge
  2. Day 2

Ubud: Rice Terraces, Silver & a Farm Lunch

Your private guide drives 20 minutes north to the Tegallalang rice terraces, arriving early when morning light rakes across the subak irrigation channels and mist still clings to the coconut palms. Walk the narrow bunds between paddies with your guide explaining the UNESCO-recognized subak water-sharing system that has governed Balinese agriculture for a thousand years. Continue to Celuk village for a silversmithing workshop — shape a simple ring or pendant under a local artisan's guidance. Lunch at a farm table above the Campuhan Valley: nasi campur (mixed rice plate), lawar (spiced coconut and green bean salad), and sate lilit (Balinese minced fish satay on lemongrass skewers), prepared with ingredients grown within sight of your table. Afternoon: explore Ubud's galleries and the Neka Art Museum, or simply return to the resort for the Sacred River Spa's Balinese boreh body treatment.

    • Cultural: Tegallalang terraces guided walk
    • Culinary: Farm-to-table nasi campur lunch above Campuhan Valley
  3. Day 3

Ubud: Temple Ceremony & Cooking Class

Morning visit to Tirta Empul, the holy spring temple where Balinese Hindus come for ritual purification — your guide explains the significance of each fountain and the etiquette of respectful observation. (Participation is possible with proper dress and intention; your guide will advise.) Continue to Gunung Kawi, a thousand-year-old rock-cut temple reached by descending 300 steps through a river valley of rice paddies and banyan trees. Afternoon: a hands-on Balinese cooking class at a family compound near Ubud — shop the morning market in Gianyar for bumbu spice pastes, shallots, and palm sugar, then learn to prepare babi guling (spiced roast pork, Bali's signature dish), jukut ares (banana stem soup), and dadar gulung (pandan crepes with coconut). Your dinner is what you've cooked, served in the family's courtyard.

    • Cultural: Tirta Empul holy spring and Gunung Kawi temples
    • Culinary: Balinese cooking class with market visit (babi guling, jukut ares)
  4. Day 4

Ubud to Sidemen: The Quiet East

Private car east through the shadow of Mount Agung to the Sidemen Valley, Bali's most unspoiled rice-terrace landscape — the route Walter Spies and other European artists first traveled in the 1930s. Check into a boutique lodge above the valley where your bungalow opens directly onto terraced paddies, Agung's volcanic cone rising behind them. Afternoon: a gentle guided walk through the valley, crossing bamboo bridges and visiting a traditional ikat-weaving workshop where women work backstrap looms in patterns passed down for generations. Evening: dinner on your terrace as fireflies appear in the rice fields — grilled river fish, sambal matah (raw shallot and lemongrass relish), and black rice pudding with coconut cream.

    • Stay: Sidemen Valley boutique lodge — Terrace bungalow with Mount Agung views
    • Cultural: Ikat weaving workshop
  5. Day 5

    Sidemen: At Leisure

A free day in the valley. Your Byline companion can arrange: a sunrise trek to a viewpoint above the rice terraces; a visit to Besakih, Bali's holiest temple complex on Agung's slopes (go with your guide for context and to navigate the approach respectfully); a white-water rafting descent of the Telaga Waja river; or simply a morning of reading on your terrace followed by a Balinese massage at the lodge. This is the day that earns the trip its slow-travel character.

    • Optional: Besakih temple visit, Telaga Waja rafting, sunrise valley trek
  6. Day 6

Sidemen to Uluwatu: Cliffs & Surf Culture

Private transfer south (approximately 2.5 hours) to the Bukit Peninsula, where Bali's character shifts from green interior to dramatic limestone coast. Check into Bulgari Resort Bali, 150 meters above the Indian Ocean on Uluwatu's cliff edge — 59 villas connected by winding stone pathways through tropical vegetation, each with a private infinity pool. Take the resort's cliff elevator down to the hidden beach, or swim in the main infinity pool as waves break on the rocks below. Evening: the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple — hundreds of chanting men forming concentric circles as the Ramayana story plays out against an ocean sunset. Dinner at Il Ristorante – Luca Fantin at the resort, where Italian tasting menus meet Indonesian inflections.

    • Stay: Bulgari Resort Bali — Ocean Cliff Villa with private infinity pool
    • Cultural: Uluwatu Temple Kecak fire dance at sunset
  7. Day 7

    Uluwatu: Beaches & Surf

A day shaped by the Indian Ocean. Morning at Padang Padang Beach, the crescent cove reached through a cliff stairway — swim or watch the surfers from the sand. Your Byline companion can arrange a private surf lesson at a beginner-friendly break nearby, or a guided snorkeling trip to the reef off Nusa Dua. Afternoon at leisure at the resort — the spa's volcanic ash and frangipani treatments are exceptional. Sundowner cocktails at the resort's cliff-edge bar beneath a traditional alang-alang thatched roof, watching the Indian Ocean turn from turquoise to gold.

    • Scenic: Padang Padang Beach cliff descent
    • Optional: Surf lesson, reef snorkeling
  8. Day 8

    Uluwatu to Jimbaran: Farewell Seafood

Morning at leisure — a final swim, a final spa treatment. Late morning transfer to Jimbaran Bay (30 minutes), where the afternoon belongs to the famous seafood market on the beach. As the sun sets, sit at a table in the sand at one of Jimbaran's beachfront warungs — choose your fish, lobster, and prawns from the ice displays, watch them grilled over coconut husks, and eat with your hands as fishing boats return to shore and the sky turns violet. This is Bali's most iconic meal for good reason.

    • Culinary: Jimbaran Bay sunset seafood dinner on the beach
  9. Day 9

    Departure

Private transfer to Ngurah Rai Airport (20 minutes from Jimbaran). Your Byline concierge confirms flight details. If time allows, a final stop at a local coffee roaster for kopi luwak or single-origin Kintamani beans to bring home.
